3 car pile up.

Car at the back hits car in the middle pushing it into the car at the front.

No one hurt.

3 friends. Front two not best pleased but it is what it is.

Question is who is responsible ?

They guy at the back caused the accident.

The guy in the middle is an innocent party but will he be responsible for hitting the car in front ?

All 3 are specialist cars and back and middle are both with same specialist insurer.

Thanks

Car at the back (#3) is responsible for hitting the car in the middle (#2). Car in the middle is responsible for hitting the car in the front (#1) (as he was too close).

So, car 1 claims off car 2. Car 2 claims off car 3.

I'm not Loon....

My bro had a similar accident, despite stopping before hitting the car in front (he says at least), he was rear ended by cars behind and given partial blame as the car in front said he felt multiple impacts. He couldn't prove he had stopped and been shunted into the car infront.

I'd guess its down to the statements provided by each driver and any witnesses

edit I'd expect 1&3's insurer to try and pass some cost to the innocent party given they would have 3 cars to repair if the place blame solely on themselves.

In the circumstances that you've posted then it's the car at the rear who is at fault for all repairs. If he is holding his hands up, then there will be no issue.

The reason he is at fault is that the car in the middle is his fault, the car in the middle would not have crashed into the car in front had the car at the rear not hit him. As such the middle car was not negligent and therefore has no liability for the accident.

Insurers often ask about the number of bangs that a car at the front felt. One bang suggests that the car in the middle was pushed into the car in front. Two bangs and the car in the middle hit the car in front and was then hit in the rear and hit the car in front again. It's not foolproof, but gives a good start point.

Wrong. Why post stuff if you've absolutely no knowledge.

Please tell me you're just having a laugh, and don't actually think that if you get hit in the rear and pushed into the car in front, it's your fault for being too close?

What gap should you leave from the car in front when stationary in a queue of traffic? What speed do you have to get hit by for it not to be your fault. Like if you're in a Smart car in a queue and get hit by a Bentley doing 70, and pushed 100 metres down the road, is it still your fault when you hit the car in front?

Yep,car 3 to blame in those circs. If they are all mates then hopefully there will be no arguments.
I remember doing 1 claim that had about 5 cars in a line, car 1 blamed car 2,who blamed car 3 for pushing him,car 3 blamed car 4 for pushing all cars forward, car 4 of course blamed car 5 for pushing ALL cars forward into #1,...except car 5 was a classic Mini, with only a tiny dent to the bumper smile

Another good reason o leave plenty of room in a line of traffic, leaves less chance of being shunted into the car in front and potentially being blamed for hitting it first by a dodgy driver who pushed you.
But a small gap doesnt make you liable at all,no matter what some think
