Second time this has happened to me now:

Question for any ex or current traffic guys - if you spot someone driving "enthusiastically", do you go in pursuit, only to find they're more us less sticking to the speed limit and just doing a little Fast n furious on the dual carriageway to get through traffic or pressing on to get home as it's clear at 2am; they're seat-belted, not drunk or on drugs and politely slow down, pull over for you to pass when they see you in their mirrors and have recovered from the panic attack? then ... without pulling the driver over just go off at the nearest exit ?

I haven't got a clue what you're on about. Basically, you were passed by a police car with lights on, but then the lights were switched off?

Either you're "more or less sticking to the speed limit" or you're "doing a little Fast n furious" and "pressing on to get home" - I can't quite see how you're doing both. How on earth do they know you're not drunk or on drugs without stopping you?

And how do you know that they weren't just going to a shout elsewhere, which got cancelled over the radio?

Thanks Too Many - point is were they just going about their business OR is this 'buzzing' a known technique.

They didn't turn off the lights & sirens after passing and yes, I may just be being paranoid, it was a coincidence I'd just made a couple of spirited overtakes at the times this has happened

Maybe they had a call cancelled. Happens fairly regular for all the emergency services.

Sounds like your ego is writing cheques your body can't cash.

You do understand that the speed limit isn't the only thing they can "do you for". Weaving in and out of traffic Fast n Furious style will get you pulled as well.

Though as said I suspect that they were answering a call that got cancelled.

Sounds like you were passed by a police car attending an urgent call.

Has that never happened to you before?

I got buzzed once, I was doing about 85-90mph in lane 1 of the M25 late at night, passed a cop in lane 3 doing about 70mph, he put his blue lights on briefly, I slowed down...

At last, someone who understands what I'm referring to ...

Saved me a fortune in shrink fees for my paranoia (joke)

But that's not what you described happened to you.

You call it "buzzed", I call it sensible policing - like the time I was driving at 85-ish on a virtually empty M3 at around 11pm. A car approached and matched my speed, then the blues came on and I thought "Oh bugger...." and slowed to 70. The police car matched my speed for a short while then drove off and I continued at 70, message received and understood.

Working nights, late shift been followed a few times, I was stting myself a bit as i may have been over the speddlimit a bit earlier on, and thought they knew..

They just followed back to the village I live, I even did some 'FBI turns' to make sure they were follwoing me, and they just carried on once i got home.

Here is a good made up story.

Around 2 am I was doing around 100 in lane 1, approaching an Audi go into lane 2 still on cruise. As I went past it the Audi lit up. I got off the accelerator and when I reached 80 the lights went off. I assumed that he didn't want me to go above 80.

I received what I would call a 'warning not to follow' an unmarked car once. Circumstances dictated that the cop knew I'd go shooting past him if he pulled to lane one, so he flashed his rear blue lights at me and went off on his merry way with me doing a more sensible speed. Everybody won. Excellent policing.

This has happened to me on the A10 - unmarked BMW 5-series with blues-and-twos going.

I'll admit now that I was doing 140mph+ and fully expected to lose my license. Not the case, I just sh*t myself instead and they turned off the lights and carried on to wherever they were going. Still panicked for a few weeks thereafter just in case I got a visit!
