I see Hampshire have just got a load of Octavia RS'
By all accounts they are returning between 8 and 15mpg when pressed hard...
Mmm..that's a bit crap..isn't it? The V70 when floored will return about 19mpg..but averages at 25-33mpg...
The Octavia RS is a bit of a dark horse. I've spoken to a couple of BiB who drive 'em and they love 'em.
We trialed an unmarked Scooby about 18 months back, in the pro-active dept I worked in. For some reason, it was a bit of a friday-afternoon-car and spent most of the time in the garage;

Ahhh memories Street - the 3 litre Ford Capri with the power bulge bonnet..
Alright on the straight but once out of line and given the boot there was a naughty tendency for the arseend to overtake you.
Once chased a suspect stolen A35 van round some wet, greasy back lanes. He nearly left me!!!!!!!!
That chap Sidewayson would have loved them.

Just for you Street - no slobbering for these had to be DRIVEN:
Ford Zephyr 2
Ford Zephyr 3 (Z Cars)
Ford Zephyr 4 (Billard table bonnets no R's to shake)
Vauxhall estates
Vauxhall Senator (back achers)
Triumph Stags (put 30 mph on anybodys cornering)
3.8 Jags. ( Lovely car but leg achers due to centre console)
but by far the best for me - Range Rover.
Ford Thames van and a Fanny Barnett 197cc when I was on Country Beat.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh DVD........... fond memories.
I too remember all the listed cars, in fact I had a Black/ Gold 3.0S JPS Capri. As you say, good in a straight line ( good torque up hills ) but crap handling. Those were the days....( sigh.......not! )

Memories indeed, this is just great Street, have you no old Jag photos?
Well do I remember the Capri DVD.
The local forces first one was a MK2 3-litre, the one with the British lump. A seriously mental thing to drive, the handling in the wet was simply dangerous, but we improved it quite a bit with Konis.
The later Capris, particularly the 2.8 injection were a good bit better and so much more ecomomical.
This is a list of some of the Scottish patrol cars that are notable from memory, most of it through being scared shitless!
Jaguar :-
3.8 MK2. Couldn't keep them going on brake pads, early Dunlop disc brakes. A great, reliable car though.
3.8 S-Type. Better brakes, much better gearbox, and Paisley had one that was an absolute flying machine.
XJ6 4.2. This set new standards of handling when it came out and the manual version was very rapid and extremely comfortable for long shifts. With overdrive, a very fast motorway car.
XJ12 5.3. I only remember one of these in this area, although I used to service dozens of privately owned ones. You really have to drive one of these to believe it, even by todays standards.
Instant 150MPH on the motorway, that was in 1971 remember!!
Penalty was 10MPG!
The police here couldn't justify those kind of fuel bills, and they didn't have it long.
I met an old friend of mine who is in the Jaguar drivers club in Scotland just a couple of months ago.
He has a '67 MK2 3.4 litre that was the Chief Inspector's car of the traffic department in Dumbarton.
He bought it all those years ago from the police and still has it.
I rebuilt the engine for him about fifteen years ago, and he still wins competitions with it!!
It must have been to the moon and back, but it's immaculate; how's that for longevity.
I think I mentioned my uncle on here who was in the traffic police in the fifties and drove a Mk 7 Jag; I mean this is a car the size of a Bentley and he used to drift it round corners on crossply tyres!!
Your remarks about the Scooby are spot on Street.
They're just crap, a cheaply manufactured product that is quick simply because it's very highly tuned, but there is no integrity in it.
There was a reference the other night about Z Cars and it reminded me of the police Zodiacs as well; these were three litre straight sixes, and whilst not as sophisticated as the Jags they could really move in a chase, and were so easy to service.
The hairiest police car I've ever driven belonged to the Met and I'm not sure if it was a one off, but it was tremendous: it was a Rover 3500S, which in it's day was a beautiful car and very rapid with a manual gearbox, but this one had a Shorrock's blower on it!!
I don't know what the output was but it was bloody phenomenal to drive, but kept blowing gearboxes, which was the weakest part of the 3500S.
I would love to see pics of any of these old cars if you can find them Street.

Yeah Cheshire got one of them and put it through Ron Strattons shop window in the middle of Knustfor on its first night out IIRC
I bought a Senator off Oxfordshire that had 900 miles on it when it fell off a bridge
not a straight panel left on the car but the engine worked a treat in my Opel Monza.Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff

, along with the 'sweeny specials' Mk1 Grannies/consols
.

More a publicity stunt than anything else. Like Norfolk Constabulary's Lotus Esprit.
