Just been watching Road Wars or similar.

A teenager was stopped for no lights. Once pulled, it turns out he was also smoking a spliff. He had passed his test four days ago

lets him off with a warning.

Yet if I happen to be doing a ton on a deserted motorway and some muppet in a van points a camera at me I would get an automated £60 and three points. This is despite having driven over half a million miles without incident

Is it any wonder I hate scammers

You'd be lucky to get 3 points and a £60...

More likely you'd be up before the beak - bigger fine and more points, possibly looking at a ban.

Its a mixed up world, for sure.

Didn't Quentin Willson do something on Top Gear about driving on Mary Jane ? ISTR it didn't really affect the test driver's control at all/that much. Alcohol was far worse.

I am reliably informed by a teenager I knew twenty years ago that even thirty feels way too fast.

While I don't condone it, I would say it's less dangerous than alcohol, but still a very bad idea when driving.

Too fast man

Yeah but its the drug of choice for the sandalist scum. Thats why some very fine institutions have been ruined. No good ever came out getting stoned.

Have to admit to having driven wasted alot of the time during a period of my adolescence. As we said at the time, why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly?

My experience was that the drug induced paranoia made me drive more slowly than when I was straight and I found it to be a drug well suited to tasks where you give unremitting concentration to the job at hand. Has the added advantage of being 'peaceful man' , so doesn't tend to make youngsters want to show off and drive like a twat, as is often the case with alcohol. Note that, despite the high number of tokers in the UK, the police bang on about drinking/driving. For this to be the case implies that accident statistics have not revealed a big connection between puffing and accident liklihood. Maybe a PH BiB will refute this?

Despite all this, now I'm an old codger I have to say that it obviously can't be condoned ...blaah blaaah

Given the scamera/BiB/Magistrate attitude of "it`s still illegal whether it`s safe or not", whether MJ has a detrimental effect on driving ability is immaterial.

Yeah it does have that slowing down effect. It took me 2 hours to wire a shower once (I mean just connect the wires). My local barber is notorious for taking anything up to 2 hours to cut hair late in the afternoon. His business only makes a profit before lunch.

So its not a good idea to get stoned and drive.

Of the only tests that have been conducted they have all reached the same conclusion.

It makes you more hesitant and slows you down.

Now under the current view of road safety this can only be considered a good thing I suppose...

We know about the seriousness of stoned drivers. The problem with a stoned driver is that is not easy to detect if they have been using drugs!

Alcohol is a dead giveaway because of the smell.
A driver may not have been 'puffing' in his/her vehicle before driving it whilst stoned, therfore there may not be the tell tale smell when you pop your hooter inside the car. The only way to tell would be their vacant expression and general lethargic attitude but, there are so many people wandering about like that anyway, how are Police to detect who is stoned and who is just slightly devoid of what makes normal people normal?

A roadside test to detect drug use is not readily available at the moment and suspicion requires arrest and then evidence from a Police Surgeon to the ends that the subject was unfit to drive. A blood test is taken if the subject consents to it. They very often do not! Evidence from Police Surgeons confirming the level of impairment doesn't happen very often. It is also not possible to measure the amount of substance within the body in the same way alcohol can be measured.

Its also next to useless as one can get stoned (in the sense of a postive drug test) passively without knowing it.

I believe there has already been a case through when one of the Northern forces were trialling the brow test kits...

Apparently said substance can be detectable in the body for up to one month after use as traces remain in body fat. This would show up in roadside test for far longer than the drug would have its effect.

Or to put it another way - having a legitimate weekend break in Amsterdam and getting tested a couple of weeks later back here could yield a positive result.

My views on hard drugs ist already well known - und research effects on brain ist still on-going. All research to date supports the dangers of these drugs long term on the body.

As for the presence in body long after taking ...

Ja ... ist present und we can detect how much was taken und how long ago. But we can do that mit booze as well - residue ist inhair und nails.

Depends on nature of the addiction as well. May not be a problem for the one- off weekend in Amsterdam - such a residue would no necessarily affect mind so long after taking - provided no heavy top-ups in-between .

Ist the bio-chemical chain reaction of the ephemeral effect on taking - followed by addictive cravings which affect the concentrations - und this could apply just as much to controlled use of pure heroin - as seems evident from Swiss Needle Park findings so far. They introduced this as Zurich was becoming organised und HIV capital of Europe in early 90s. It still has organised crime - und HIV.... - but "allegedly less per official statistics" - which most weary Swiss give an "Oh Yeah? Really?" about.

Its our very own ring of steel.

They stay in until they agree to abide by the rules.

Think of it as a virtual custody suite, with better food

Until released, usually involves grovelling to Ted and being suitably apologetic I believe.

Cravings being psychological rather than physiological and only apparent in a tiny proportion of heavy regular users...
