I may have been caught out on the M6 today, plain yellow unmarked transit style van sat on a flyover pinging southbound traffic.

I had the CC set at 84 which is a true 81 on GPS, backed off as soon as I clocked it but probably too late, so the sweating starts now.

81 is surely well within naughty boy course territory, so if I do get offered one, do I have to go all the way back up there to attend, or can I do it down south?

A big yellow van on a motorway flyover is hardly sneaky.
Particularly when for at least two miles in either direction, there are signs warning you about it.

No really, there are. And both they and the intermittent camera van have been in the same place for several years between Junctions
37 to 40 on the M6.

Depends if they are part of the national course or not.

I was caught speeding 5 years ago in the exact same place (M6 southbound carriageway just after junction 40) by the big yellow van parked on an overhead bridge when I was working up at Sellafield. I was offered the speed awareness course (for 81mph) and was able to complete it in Manchester near my home address.

Apropos of nothing in particular, the only time I've been caught on camera was in Cumbria, on the A590 just after the end of the dual carriageway. Was done for 70 in a 60, at 9pm on a clear summer's evening with nothing on the road.

I was the only one of the 50-odd people on the course who had been caught outside of a 30 zone and funnily enough, given that a lot of the emphasis was on how much longer it took to stop from 40 than it did from 30, I didn't really get much from the experience. Still, better than the points I guess.

Cool story bro I know, but it's been rankling for a couple of years now.

The parameters are fairly well known.

Why not restrict your speed to NSL + 10% + 1. i.e. 78mph?

What's wrong with that? 79mph is the start of the enforcement threshold.

I've never understood the term "scamara". Where's the scam? They set a speed limit, and you get fined and points if caught exceeding it. We may not like the limit set, or the position of the camera, but that still doesn't make it a scam.

What would be a scam would be if they were fining people who were travelling under the limit, and falsifying evidence to convict people unjustly. But I've seen no evidence of that.

Or calling a camera van 'sneaky' when you've set your cruise control at a speed higher than the 10% +1 for the road on which you're driving.

Even more so if you set your cruise control for 84 in a 70. A scam it is not.

It's sneaky because it's a long, flat and straight 3 lane road with good visibility with no history of deaths, accidents nor any other "danger", thus the only purpose of them is to generate cash.

I'm sure you're hacking out a reply right now screaming that "SEVENTY IS THE SPEED LIMIT!!!!!!!!!!11111" but just don't bother wasting your time please.

Oh hasn't it?

The M6 had 24% of all the KSI and fatalities in Cumbria up to 2002. Perhaps you were not aware of that when you made up that reply.

Oh....and now it hasn't.

No need to cloud the issue with evidence based facts.

Visibility can't be that good if you missed a "sneaky" bright yellow van.

I do apologize for stating facts there...I was forgetting myself.

Where is your source that states no deaths or accidents resulting in injury? Or did you just make that up?
