SORN for a future 'Barn Find'

I have a friend who has been wondering what to do about her old car which has been off the road since early 2001, and never SORN'd. She "wants to do something" with it, but is worried that, somehow, the DVLA will start chasing her with years of undeclared-SORN penalties, and it will cost her a fortune.

As I am not certain of the situation myself, I can't really advise her to do anything other than contact the DVLA for advice (shock!), so I thought I'd see what other PH-ers views on this might be.

So what has she done with it? Taxed it every year or just let it lapse?

Surprised she hasn't been fined already!!

She has - quite simply - done absolutely nothing with since it ran out of tax and she parked it a shed in early 2001. To the best of my knowledge, it's not moved since (and, certainly, it has had too much junk piled around it since I first saw it, back around 2003...

You'd have thought the DVLA would have enquired about it by now!

Tbh her only course of action is to SORN it and see what happens. Do it online and wait, I can't see it being that bad.....

SORN introduced 1998; last tax on it expired early 2001.

It took a few years to properly get used, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I wouldn't sorn it now, and just tax it when it comes back out.

If they ask, it "was sorned back in 2001"

Only to the right buyer - it was built in the 80s and has a soft top but is in pretty rough shape.

Just tell them it was SORN'd? I can't imagine they can find any records that far back.
