Last night driving home on my usual commute I noticed all the overhead gantry signs
were lit up continually with the National Speed Limit applies sign.

This sign usually only appears for a few seconds when the reduced limits (40,50,60) is switched off.
I've been driving this route for a few years.

I am wondering if lighting the NSL sign means the Gatso's which are usually only applied to reduced limits
will be triggered on the 70mph limit too?

Let's fix this straight away.

The speed cameras DO NOT ONLY APPLY TO THE NATIONAL 70 LIMIT WHEN THE SIGNS ARE LIT. WHEN THE SIGNS ARE NOT IT THE NATIONAL 70 LIMIT APPLIES AND MAY BE AND IS ENFORCED WITH THESE CAMERAS

Carry on.

Yes, OP, the 70 limit will be enforced.

I seem to remember a thread on here about a guy getting pinged on the M42 for doing around 100 (I think?) when they were unlit. A number of other people commented to say that they've been through above 70 but below 100 and not got caught, suggesting that there's quite a tolerance for the cameras to be activated when they're either unlit or lit with the NSL sign.

There is a high tolerance when the national limit is in play and you're pretty much on the money!
