Yesterday evening a friend was stopped by the police at the side of the road and this has resulted in the police issuing a document requesting him to produce valid insurance documentation within seven days at his local Police station. The difficulty is he purchased the vehicle one month ago from a dealership who explained that providing the car displayed as insured on the MID database he was insured to drive it and therefore chose not to take out a policy on it just yet.

Tomorrow he is going back to the dealership to obtain the relevant documents to produce at the police station however what position is he in if the dealership does not provide the insurance documentation?

Not a chance in hell the dealership just told him to keep on driving the car on their policy. That is ridiculous.

Methinks he's heading for 6 points.

Your friend is, in all likelihood, looking at 6 points + fine.

It is the drivers responsibility to prove they are insured for this car, at this time, for this purpose.

"It's on MID" provides no such proof.

It may still have been showing on MID which is why the police asked him to produce rather than seize.

I can't see a valid scenario that it was covered by the dealer without them providing some documentation, in the form of a cover/insurance document.

To your friend... "yikes"

6 points for no insurance will make his next policy expensive.

I remember you posting a load of stories on Biker Banter a few months ago and didn't you crash your car drifting it and got nicked for drink driving? You sure have an unlucky set of friends rolleyes

Either way, your friend is getting 6 points at least and a fine.

Maybe your "friend" shouldn't be driving if he is that stupid.

Wasn't he the same guy who thought his best plan of defence against drink driving was to claim that his drink had been spiked by a random stranger he'd just met in the pub, or something like that? laugh

That's him. Hit a kerb at the time.

Also had another thread about damaging his car whilst drifting around a roundabout.

Some dealerships do do "7 day drive away insurance" ( although it's a bit of a palaver getting it arranged).

Never seen dealers insuring for more than 7 days though. I think your friend might be telling porkies wink

I'm not exusing the OP's friend, but the last time I took a free 7-day insurance policy (in 2008), I was told that unless I called up to cancel, I'd automatically be debited for a year's policy. I think it was with Aviva. I obviously wasn't the target market as they quoted me nearly £5,000 when I rang up two days into my free insurance - surprisingly, I declined to proceed with the policy after the free period ran out.

Obviously not an excuse for failing to insure a car but I wouldn't be surprised if it's caught a few people out in the past.

Hilarious.
How could your "friend" be so dim?
6 points and a fine heading his way.

Just did one with VW and there was no on-going cover beyond (in their case) 5 days. They didn't take any payment details upfront.

I never trusted these sorts of policies in the past so just used them to get the car registered and taxed. My insurance has always started around the time of collection.

I think your mate is in for some fun.

What sort of policies? The OP's "friend" didn't buy or get given a 7 day policy, that's a recent suggestion by someone in here.

It is indeed. Tried deleting the post but it had already been quoted.

I don't recall seeing them posting a result - if there was any result to be posted in the first place.

I read the original post as he got one of those 7 day ones used for taxing.

like already said, he's getting 6 points and a fine.

I've had 5 or 7 day drive away policies when buying cars....... they're a tempter by brokers I guess to get you to sign up.

Obviously within that period you sort your own insurance out- usually by updating your existing policy.

Your friend is an absolute mong if he thinks "X" days later he's fine on such a thing.
