I did search for this topic expecting it to be covered before, but I wasn't able to see anything.

I have a phone which is outside of contract/warranty, which I had broken the screen on. No other issues, it was still working fine, but the glass was cracked.

Being out of warranty, I took it to a local independant repirs shop for a new screen. All seemed good for about an hour after collecting the phone, but then it rebooted itself and became stuck in a loop of starting up and switching off (well documented issue for this model in various places, seems to be down to putting screws back in the wrong place which then short something in the phone, eg. https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/167884/iPhone+... ).

The shop have taken it back in for repair, but as yet they have seemed unable to resolve it. They haven't messed me about, but I am getting frustrated now being without a phone for a week now.

Is there anything I should be doing next, or rather what are my rights? I'm a bit concerned if they turn around and say it can't be fixed that I will be out a phone.

I'd be contacting them asking them if they have any news on it, and whether you can go for a chat.

I'd ask them (nicely) that if they can't repair it, replace it like for like, whilst you still pay the repair charge,(new phone, with unsmashed screen) and everybody's happy and they don't get bad publicity.

Consumer Rights Act Chapter 4 applies : http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2015/15/part/1...

If they have failed to complete the contract with reasonable care & skill, within a reasonable period of time and for a reasonable price, you can require them to try again or reduce the price - or you can seek other remedies.

Did the repairer state that the phone could be repaired without a problem, or did they say there can be problems?

If it was an Iphone 5 there are 3 screws needed to be removed to change the screen.

One is longer and if put back in the wrong hole can damage the motherboard breaking the phone.

If that is the case I would be asking them for a replacement phone. A good repairer should know the situation!

There are a number of different screw sizes in an Iphone. It's a nightmare trying to figure out which is which!

Yep, I believe this is what has happened (link in the first post).

Thanks for the responses, I am going into the shop tonight top find out what is the latest, but after speaking to them at the end of last week I will be pushing for a replacement as I don't think they are able to repair.

I did the exact same.
The shop changed the screen but also changed the fingerprint sensor. when I got it back I questioned them about it and was told to bring it back the next week but before I could do that an update came out. the update failed due to a hardware error (the touch id sensor) and my phone was useless. Ended up having to get it replaced at Apple for a small fortune.
Do you know if yours has been changed?
