Scenario.

Moved house in Aug 15.

Bought car in early Nov 15.

Got a NIP end Nov 15 for car bought in early Nov 15, but sent to wrong, old address. How an earth did the NIP go there? Only thing I can think of is that the dealer used my old address on the V5 their end.

Now what would you do? Yes I was on that road in that car on that date stated on the NIP, but that car has never ever been at that address.

Do you need to ask?

The NIP has reached the correct person has it not? I am not sure what point you are trying to make.

Bugger all to do with where the car has been parked.

I'm confused, have you got the V5c for the new car and it is your new address on it?

Why would the NIP have gone to the garage anyway, was it registered to them?

Why would the garage even know what your old address was from 3 months previously? Unless you traded in and hadn't bothered to get your address updated on the docs for that car!

I'm guessing you traded in a car and the dealer used the address on that V5 to fill out the address for the V5 for your new car.

Why hadn't you changed the address on the V5 for your old car?

Was it you, was the offence on a road and at a time that means you think it was you?

I brought a car and got a NIP through the post but the car had been cloned, not uncommon apparently to clone a for sale car.

Offence was local to me but I was out of the country and my car was parked at Heathrow on the day in question.

What is the address on the new V5 for the new car? That will be where the NIP was sent.

surely you would know if the new v5 was sent to your current address or not

if you don't have one then that would be a big clue that the wrong address was used, they are normally sent out very promptly, often in around a week, usually within 2

One of the problems with moving house. Easy to overlook all notifications of change of address.
Your responsibility to ensure that your details are correct.
If the NIP was sent to & arrived within time at the address shown at the time of sending of the registered keeper then it is valid.

It only has to be sent (to the registered keeper at the details held at the time) within time.

Must be sent so it would arrive within the 14 days.

"The NIP must be served on the driver or registered keeper within 14 days of the offence otherwise the offence cannot proceed at court. If the details of the driver are not known, then it is sent to the registered keeper. In either case, so long as it arrives at the relevant address within the time limit the notice is valid.

If the registered keeper has changed address/not informed DVLA etc., as long as the NIP arrived at the address on record for the registered keeper within 14 days, it is still valid. The registered keeper then has an obligation to identify the driver."
