I have a couple of cars on a classic policy which was automatically renewed in September. One of the cars was SORN'd at the time but I taxed it in October, the car must have been insured at that point otherwise I wouldn't have been able to tax it.

Yesterday I had a call from my insurance company and it appears that there had been a mix up with the insurance company and the people who provide the finance. This meant that no money ever left my account. The insurance company says that my policy is still running as it was a mix up at their end, however, my car appears as uninsured on the MID. I've been using the car on the road and I'm a little concerned that I may have been driving uninsured.

Do you need to be pulled over to be prosecuted for driving uninsured or can ANPR cameras get you?

Thanks

ANPR would only alert them that your car is being driven, not who is driving it. It could be covered under a traders policy etc. so they would need to pull you over to actually "do you" for no insurance.

OP, if the insurer has told you the policy is still valid have they confirmed this in writing? If not, ensure they do this and get them to update the MID asap.

As for ANPR, it isn't clever enough to tell who is driving. Merely that an a supposedly uninsured car is being used on the road.
I doubt that the police have the resources to follow up every case where there hasn't been a roadside stop.
Unless of course someone has reported you for fleeing the scene of an accident...

The more likely risk is an administrative CIE penalty from DVLA for not declaring SORN if the cars show up on the MID as uninsured for long enough.

The previous poster's reference to traders insurance policy is very unlikely to be relevant in your case. As the name implies these are for purposes in connection with the motor trade. The private use of a specific vehicle or vehicles would need to be written into the policy. Some insurers will allow this, others won't.

Yes, you would. Insurance hasn't been checked when you buy tax for a few years.

But it is checked against MID at Swansea, and there's probably a CIE snottygram on the way to you right now. Shouldn't be hard to get action stopped, but prepare for a few letters.

Thanks for the replies. I have asked for a letter to say that I have been covered all along, hopefully that will arrive soon. It's reassuring to hear about the ANPR system not leading to prosecution so hopefully I'll be able to get the DD's set up and we're back to normal.
