Why do people get so excited?
Discussion
I've noticed a lot of threads in here where people say things like 'Scamera Van on the A123 tossers..'
What I want to know is why these people get so pissy with the police enforcing a law? These guys are only doing a job.
I'm all for use of lower limits around schools and increased limits on some motorways and I will speed, however, with the increase in technology why do people get so angry? I use GPS based camera notification and observation when driving to ensure that I keep my speed in check when need be, and can't understand why other people seem to take it so personally when another camera is erected, or when they see a mobile speed checking van.
Drive smart people, and don't resent other people for doing a job to put food on the table.

It hardly needs saying, so I'll hardly say it. Road traffic law and safety have parted company. The law on vehicle speed is an ass. Cameras and vans are the visible sign of laws and government policies in disrepute, so they are the target of understandable anger and resentment at an arbitrary and heavy handed approach with no safety benefits supported by a well funded spin machine in order to generate revenue - to quote Canadian road safety groups and politicians after they ditched automated speed enforcement.

The issue people have is that they are doing a job that persecutes motorists for no gain in safety, even though their propaganda says otherwise.
Would you apply your maxim to an asassin that is paid to kill people? The scamera partnerships are not that far removed, they are being paid and yet their presence appears to be causing deaths. (see www.safespeed.org.uk/stats/index.html ).
WTD, I think you may have missed the point discussed "a number of times" on this site.
As Mr2Mike suggests, have a look at the SafeSpeed site; this should encompass most, probably all, of what people say on this site with regard to the absurd way this government and its minions have engineered a lucrative concentration on speed of travel as a way of supposedly promoting "safe driving".

I got scammed in 2000, 30 mph limit, uphill, overtaking lane, stuck behind slow moving lorry, no obvious limit signs. Also no schools, shops, OAP homes, pets, in fact no bugger, apart from lorry & scamera van, hidden behind bushes in not so obvious layby, Tossers.
Northamptonshire Constabulary tracked my company car through leasing company, my company and then me. All for £40 and three points. Tossers.
Compare that to when I had a series of attempted break-ins, The Police, eventually, on the third go just about managed to attend, and then only when I demanded it, the first two they offered me a crime number so I could claim on my insurance. Absolutley no attempt at gaining evidence, or as far as I could tell, catching real criminals. Toss..s.
Then you wonder why we call 'em Tossers.

There was a letter in the Metro the other day on a similar theme - ie. "if you lot all obeyed the law and stuck to the speed limit then you wouldn't get done for speeding. The law there for a reason. Blah blah blah. Speed Kills. Think of the children. Blah blah blah"
I wonder if advocates of this would feel the same if the speed limit on motorways was dropped to 5mph? Would they dutifully crawl along at walking pace, safe in the smug knowledge that they were obeying the law, or would they think "bugger this" and exceed this new limit?
I ask because this is already happening up and down the country, albeit in a less extreme manner. How many 60mph limits have dropped to 40mph recently? I've lost count.
So, to answer your question, when people see a camera van enforcing an artifically low speed limit at a location of maximum revenue, the natural reaction is to think "tossers".
So there you go.

Because (and this really should be obvious) to all and sundry; What has safe driving got to do with a posted speed limit? -Answer= Sweet f/a.
If you need a gps device to tell you where its safe to drive at a safe speed then you really shouldnt be driving.
The reason we all get so "pissed off" as you so delicately put it
is that its the constant invasion of personal space and privacy, coupled with the indignation of knowing that what theyre doing has absolutely **nothing whatsoever to do with safety** and everything to do with grabbing a dollar or 6 million. If that dosent bother you then i feel sorry for your lack of understanding of the subject matter, but maybe you really need to study it a bit harder and get a handle on it?
It is absolutley NOT OK to use speed checks as a fund raiser for greedy quangos and inept government/council/magistrate courts/police/and hospitals management. Then they tell us its all about safety. THATS the pisser, right there! If that dosent instill some sense of indignation in you then nothing will.
They are NOT "just doing their job" either, theyre actively participating in a scam thats costing lives in favour of a cash grab, and to me thats just the same as pulling the trigger themselves.
So, there ya have it, reasons for getting "pissed off" when these scum are out raping our wallets.
Nuff said i think.
I think one of the reasons for resentment is that it is so easy to get points for driving which is naturally safe.
The A1 for instance has areas which are restricted to 40 mph for no apparent reason(although it's obviously for revenue). Driving at 40mph on an empty dual-carriageway is very difficult to do if you've been driving for many years. It isn't natural, and you have to stare at the speedo like a startled bunny to achieve the desired results.
My wife has 3 points for doing 45 in a 40. It was a country A-road, we never saw the camera, we were simply keeping up with traffic, everyone must've been done. Scandalous.
Anyone who has experienced police reaction to other crimes increases the feeling they just concentrate on speeding motorists because it's easy. I'm sure this isn't the truth.

Liebchen - it depends how they enforce this law. All too often it ist nit picking over a blip - und yards within a speedlimit change.
That ist not in interests of safety ind more in interests of money making to ensure they ae viable enough to meet the wages bill.

I'm all for use of lower limits around schools
So why build a school on a 50 mph road? Or a 40 mph road - und these are new schools down on appraoch to urnab sprawl...
Und why, Liebchen, are they not placing their vans near schools anyway?
because they know that traffic crawls at traipse in /chuch out time - und most all slow down at the school sites - und some are off the main road - tucked in residential estates....

Ist the underhand tactic...

I also use the useful gadget - but that does not mean I approve of their tactics ...

Ist a job which may put food on their table und take it off another's for 4 offences at 4 mph above a posted limit.
Und if they do not earn any money - they cannot meet the wages bill - thus ist self-interest not safety.... und they deceive themsleves that they save lives as well...

The camera van may only be enforcing the law, but they wouldn't be needed if we all drove within the limits. Hence you shouldn't need a GPS based system.
The (majority of) speed limits are too low, and are being lowered and sneakily enforced, for no good reason and at the cost of livelihoods.
I don't mind BiB enforcing traffic behaviour/speed, but why don't they do it where it really is dangerous to speed: schools or areas of high pedestrian densities; at least the mere presence of BiB would deter actions of paedophiles and anti-social activities respectively.
Maybe BiB have to meet quotas for issuing NIPs, but surely they can do so where it makes a difference, not where there are easy pickings.

I'm afraid that you've used too many letters in your initial question. See exhibit A, above. There is a limit of 200 characters in a new topic, sorry but that's just the way it is and you knew that.
You now need to pay £60 and have your license endorsed for 3 points, or go to court to defend your illegal actions.
Thank-you for your cooperation, and type carefully.

Try not to make so many sweeping assumptions mate. I'm not saying that I agree with the speed camera's, far from it, but I'm trying to have a debate without it resorting to 'Tree hugging' name calling for people who's opinion differs from someone elses.
That is where the thread came from. Why can't people just accept that they are trying to fund the police force with the use of camera's and drive accordingly?
They have planted loads of camera's and have mobile camera's. Why not get a device to warn you and drive fast when you can see that you're not going to get a ticket???
You all moan and whine about the actual trivialities of the speed camera's such as they call them safety cameras when they're not safe etc, but you'd still moan if they changed the name to "Cash Camera's"
The driving environment is changing around us, and we need to adapt to these changes.
