1. Double crewed fully battenburged Volvo V70 traffic car parked up and traditionally speed checking on the A413 into Amersham this morning - for a moment I thought I had gone back 20 years...
2. Said crew then getting out of their car to attend to (or to give witnesses details to) what looked to be a very minor collision between a stationary car waiting to turn right from a minor road and a 4 axle grab lorry turning right into the minor road off the A413

Can we also give a very loud raspberry to the idiot in the grab lorry who had cut the corner at the junction by a huge margin in front of said police Volvo. I hope you got the talking too, breathalyser, sight test and full VOSA inspection you deserve.

I am about to be that guy, but...

All this crime, all these reduced budgets and numbers, and the best thing not one, but two coppers could find to do was raise a few quid for the Christmas party fund?

I'm not saying go out and catch some burgulars, but there must, surely, be something more pressing on their list.

I don't overly disagree, but in response I'll be this guy - firstly the location was on the change of a limit from Rural single lane NSL to 30mph(1), the main road is particulary PH worthy with one school 1 mile up the road in each direction and it was 8 in the morning. The roads in the side junctions are not well sighted and they may well have been a manned check prior to positioning a camera. I would rather have manned policing rather than cameras just for the education and judgement calls the officers can make.

Secondly, it was probably part of TVPs christmas drink & drug drive campaign. In which case I can't really think of much better they could be doing at that time in the morning.

Allocation of resource can't be easy, I only flagged it in this post because police traffic enforcement is extremely rare and because they then stepped into what looked like no more than a car park scuff when I suspect they didnt need to nor had any bearing on the outcome, unless one of the drivers involved was still pissed from last night.

(1) this is the view of the location https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.6706042,-0.54742... - I got the road number wrong, it was the A404. The traffic car was in the side road on the left, the HGV turned right as you look at it. The astute among you will also notice the line between the two limit change signs is not perpendicular to the centre line, which could make for some pedantic discussions should one be so inclined...

You'll be surprised at how often traffic offences lead to other offences.

Lost count of the possession of drugs I've dealt with after stopping a vehicle for something. Warrants out for their arrest or people driving without insurance.

Would you prefer the police to sit in the office waiting for a job to come in, or be out and about possibly deterring someone.

I'm going to be that guy...don't speed and you won't have to worry about the police with a speed laser.

It honking about this I am surprised by how often traffic offences lead to other offences. My assumption is that most people commit traffic offences and in particular excessive speed. At the same time I assume that only a small proportion of those speeding are guilty of other offences. As the police only stop a small percentage of those speeding there must be some other associated factor as otherwise there must be a lot more people commuting other offences than I think

People who show poor judgement in one aspect of their lives (driving) are also likely to show poor judgement in other areas.

It amazes me* that people committing a main crime that can't be picked up by ANPR (eg boot full of drugs) get pulled for a minor crime (no insurance/tax) that's likely to be picked up by ANPR - if I was doing something illegal I'd make absolutely sure the car was legal, check the lights and tyres every time I set off and drive like I was taking my test!

(* well it doesn't because if they had enough intelligence to work this out they wouldn't be doing the main crime in the first place)

I visited a prison once to do some training for inmates.

Something about my face must have caught one of the PO's eye because he turned to me and said "don't feel sorry for them, they're only here because they did something stupid. If they were smarter we never would've caught them"

stuck with me that one

Perhaps I misunderstood the meaning of "traditional speed checking"? All this talk of stopping a vehicle to discover other offences doesn't hold up if all they're doing is zapping people with a laser and then sending a ticket in the post. Of course, if the OPs meaning was of actual coppers physically stopping speeders, then that's a different kettle of fish.

It's not so much that I don't want to get caught speeding, so I'd rather they didn't enforce it. It's much more a case that all I read and hear about the police force is that they are on their collective chinstrap, there are half the number there needs to be or whatever. In the face of this, I wonder whether semi-automated enforcement of a deeply trivial administrative rule really ought to be sufficiently close to the top of the priorities list that it justifies keeping two police officers and a police car busy for an hour or two.

Being out and about looking for baddies and identifying them by their excess speed is what we used to call 'copper's nose'. Looking for the excess speed as the offence in itself seems like a poor use of a very limited resource.

That is what I meant, but no doubt the on board ANPR was also active as well as the "nose" picking out still drunk drivers, seat belt use, phone use etc etc.

If there was no higher priority for the traffic unit (they had white covers on their caps so we are talking very trad traffic policing here) then I would sooner they were policing compliance, especially on that road (or similar) at that time in the morning rather than the M25 or supporting local stations. That said, this is the first time in 3 years using this route that I have seen proactive policing in any form.

You do realise one of the traffic departments jobs is to police the roads and catch those breaking the law? Would you rather they ditched the car and walked around town?

I had it described to me a couple of years back as "denying criminals the use of the roads". The copper in question also commented on the number of arrests for (some very serious) offenses totally unrelated to driving or the car in question.
