Failed to stop after a bump... Where do I stand?

Have a bit of a situation I'm trying to work through. Mrs was stationary today in traffic in the middle of Sevenoaks and a muppet in a van not wanting to wait in the queue, pushed through the middle of the road, got caught by a car coming the opposite way and pulled back in too tight, scraping down the whole side of the car.
He was fully aware of the accident not least from the expletives coming from the wife, but he failed to stop nevertheless, and she failed to get the reg.
Reported to the police so far, but they are asking US if there's any camera footage. Just feel very "unhelped"...
Any thoughts/ideas welcome...
We're pursuing a witness who might have some dash cam footage but not overly hopeful.
Do we just go back and look for cameras or what?

Sevenoaks is covered in cameras - details here: http://www.sevenoaks.gov.uk/services/housing/crime...
Most important thing is to be accurate with time and location but if you can do that and get in touch with the council, they will probably have footage but they may only supply it to the police. If you have time, turning up at the council offices in Argyll road will probably be the quickest way of getting an answer. Good luck with getting hold of the scroate.

Police budgets are at breaking point and a non-injury fail to stop collision is right down the priority list, unfortunately. It's not unreasonable for you to have a recce of the scene to determine any likely cameras.
Unless there is a camera right there, unfortunately one of your two hopes is Bob, presume no witnesses got the reg?
None of this is intended to detract from how much of an arse van man is, nor how annoyed you are, but sadly it's the truth.

I had something like this on the way to work last year, foreign lorry going down a country road it had no business going down. I was stuck in a queue of traffic and just had to watch.
Somehow though it only touched my wing mirror and popped the front tyre, I attempted to get some cctv from the nearby pubs but nobody really cared so I just left it.

tell the van was speeding, then the interest level will magically rise.
I would say get a dash cam but there not for people like your wife to protect her in these sort of circumstances capturing evidence and the reg. According to folk on here they are like cyclist camera they are there for you to go out create a situation and then catch it on camera and play the victim.
Without a reg good luck

If there was no footage, she didn't get the number plate and there were no witnesses that came forward with a number plate, what do you expect the police to do? Go round every van in the country matching up the paint?
Go back to the scene and see if there are any traffic CCTV camera and ask to see those. Traffic cameras are usually very old though and are not zoomed in so it's unlikely they would read a number plate but you never know. Also check to see if there were any store front cameras nearby.

This happened to a family member, where a van turned right from the left only lane at a roundabout and smashed the front wing. He then sped off through a red light.
Police were great, identified the camera that captured it, reviewed the footage, and then phone the driver - I guess his number was on the van. Instead of holding his hands up immediately, and suffering a bit of an insurance claim he ended up losing his job in the end I think.

A few years back a tractor going too fast pulling a huge hay trailer dragged my C class down the road into a Honda CRX writing our car off.
Mrs in the hairdressers, heard the commotion went outside to be greeted by several witnesses who gave her the number of the offending vehicle.
Police took statements but could not take further action as the number plate did not match the description of the registered vehicle as it was probably taken from the trailer. The agri contractor denied all knowledge and said he told his guys to be good citizens etc.....
Outcome was no further action, the PC told me they knew it was him but couldn't take any further. I was £650 excess out of pocket plus having to stump up for a new car. I still feel bummed about it today but karma will get b
d one day.
Just move on....life doesn't have to be fair

Front & rear dash cams are the only way forward, with the sort of people we have to share the road with today, it's cost me a few quid to get them in the family fleet, but with 24 hour parking mode recording I'm as covered as I will ever be. Sadly the police no longer have the time or money to investagate unless you show them hard evidence. Poeple simply cannot remember things like reg numbers now, in the old days you had to remember people's phone numbers, but now you don't, a machine will do that for you, these chancers just drive off in the hope people will not remember the reg no afterwards and get away with it for that very reason
which front and back camera do you have?
I had miovue 388 (I think it was that model number, definitely the miovue brand) which was a bit poor. It used to stop recording intermittently and when I checked to see if there was missing footage, indeed there were gaps in the film. And then my toddler son busted the power connection so I am camera-less at the moment.
