Dartford toll charge
Discussion
I got a fine yesterday, but also a nice letter saying they would drop the penalty as this is my first time. Their website sucks, not responding for minutes on end, then throwing up an error. Then "click here to send is feedback so we can improve our service" results in another error message after typing and submitting my feedback.

I did this last time I used it and sent them "What was wrong with throwing a few coins into a funnel like it has been since the thing was built?" All I got was an error message.tom2019 said:
So I admit I saw the sign and somewhere in between the two hour journey I completely forgot about it.
So I recieve a £75 fine.
Anyone else been fined? I admit was my fault but seems a bit steep to me?
Several of my colleagues have had he fine and phoned up to make payment for the actual toll itself and had the fine over turned. So I recieve a £75 fine.

A few of them have done this twice.

Several responses have indicated that the small print on the Penalty Notice allows you to pay just the crossing charge. So I recieve a £75 fine.

Surprising, (incredible?!) but with so many people saying it, do please have a careful re-read of the paperwork and report back.

I have no idea what the bit in bold means. Please clarify.thainy77 said:
Yes me, i paid it yesterday, i don't live in the UK so i received the notice late but they wouldn't accept this so i had the full bill. It's 30GBP if paid in time.
Incorrect. It's £35 - i.e 50% discount.thainy77 said:
ETA: 5GBP admin fee. so 75GBP total.
Sorry, I call custard on this. Admin fees/surcharges in respect of processing PCNs are not permitted. This was definitively decided by The Hon. Mr. Justice Burnett on application for judicial review in The High Court of Justice Queen's Bench Division Administrative Court. Judgement was handed down in February 2011. The charging authority can only collect the amount of the penalty prescribed by the relevant Order.SS2. said:
One of ours guys used the crossing this summer and clean forgot to pay.
A PCN turned up at the office a couple of months later with the option to pay just £2.50 ie the original price of the crossing.
Leniency was certainly shown in the early days of the new system, but your guy must have been lucky because I wasn't aware that was still the case as late as this summer. All the PCNs I have seen* demand the full £70 plus the £2.50 crossing fee - i.e. £72.50 or £37.50 with the prompt payment discount.A PCN turned up at the office a couple of months later with the option to pay just £2.50 ie the original price of the crossing.
* None of them were mine btw.

It's a Penalty Charge Notice: no different from a local authority parking ticket or a CoFP for speeding.
All with statutory backing. To the man on the Clapham omnibus it is equivalent to a fine imposed by a court.
A quite different kettle from a PPC 'invoice' which is governed by the law of contract.

Bloody stupid system imo, I guess that many people who don't live in the south east east get caught out by it.
I rarely use the Dartford crossing but even so have set up a Dart Charge account and added all of our family cars to it, I think there's £20 in the account and a direct debit to top it up when it drops below a certain amount. It's cheaper and easier than paying the inevitable fine when someone forgets to pay, I'll just have to remember to remove a car from the account when one gets sold.

He failed to pay for a crossing in August, we received the PCN sometime in October. * None of them were mine btw.

To be fair, and with the new system having been in place for a while, I was surprised he was offered the £2.50 get out.
