Car Tax, Late Payment, Fines etc.
Discussion
Right, bit of an odd one on car tax that has happened to my sister in law over the past month.
She realised her tax was out end December but was 6 or 7 months overdue (was due around June). She moved house in the last year and hadn't changed address etc on v5 or driving licence so obviously didn't get the renewal notice (no excuse I know).
I said when she goes to tax it online it won't let her and she could be facing up to a fine of around £1000 (can't remember what it says online) BUT she went online and taxed her car fine, no issues. Also with the new system no paper tax disc is needed to be sent to the house so car is now taxed no issues.
I mentioned she'll have letters at her old address from DVLA for no tax etc and fines but here's another twist, her old flat (big block of flats) have been demolished so that address doesn't actually exist anymore!
She has now changed the v5 address to her new house and changed her driving licence too and hasn't had any bother from DVLA.
Is this just blind luck that she hasn't been fined or will they still track her down (somehow)??
Cheers

A couple of years ago I forgot to tax one of my bikes that was off the road whilst I rebuilt the engine, I didn't get a reminder in the post (not a valid excuse, I know) and simply forgot as I wasn't using it, so at no time was the bike actually on the road without tax.
When I realised my mistake I went straight online and taxed it. I was shortly contacted by the 'compliance team' (or some other newspeak BS name) telling me that I had committed an offence and that I had to pay an £80 fine (which was more than the tax).
There was a number to call but it stated specifically only for making payment and not to argue the point.
Another automated 'compliance' offence, seemingly designed to issue as many fines as possible to mainly forgetful people and like other such cowardly enforcement methods will only cause more resentment amongst generally 'law-abiding' people.
Anyway rant aside, I don't know if any leeway is given, so expect a fine, probably...
