Is it actually illegal to display an out of date tax disc on your vehicle (both an old real one or one of these classic ones) ?

Many thanks, is there any chance you can elaborate for me please ?

The reason for the question is a chap on the Moto Guzzi site is insisting that his "mates" have been fined for this.

I will openly admit that I am one of those sad gits that have a "period" tax disc now on his classic bike (a copy of what would have been its first disc had it of had one ..... it was in Germany at this time along with me), and I've never bothered to remove the expired one from my van (most of my mates haven't bothered either).

Period discs have become popular among some classic car and bike owners, just because we now can(or so we thought).

Not sure how to elaborate on something that isn't an offence.

Perhaps you should ask the guy on the Moto Guzzi site to advise which legislative measure supposedly resulted in his mates getting fined for displaying an out of date disc when there is no longer any requirement to display a disc.

Again many thanks, he is still insistent at the moment, I have invited him to view this thread.

No, but the Garage where I go now considers that any item on the windscreen that is not needed is grounds for an MOT fail.

Fined for displaying a piece of meaningless paper? Which is what it now is.
No.
Some people on forums are best ignored.

Are they suitably qualified to undertake MOT tests ?

That has always been the case I believe if it is in the sweep of the wipers, unless it was something large I've never heard of it being enforced though.

I've always thought it renders most screen mounted sat navs unlawful, I've never heard of it being enforced though and I've seen a few mounted right in the middle of the screen like a heads up display !

Ask him to get his "mates" to scan the paperwork in. If they exist. If it exists. If it isn't for something else entirely.

If it's in the zone swept by the wipers it could well be.
Have a read of Section 8.3 (page 179)in this link:

I've replaced my RFL with a PH disc! smile

Anyway 'It's all on the database' as the somewhat 1984ish TV licence ad used to say so why should anyone bother with a visual check?

BTW anyone barrelling up the A23 from Brighton will often find a camera car marked 'Road Tax Check' snapping away in a lay-by just over the Downs.

That's not what he was suggesting the garage was claiming, though - apparently, they are advising that 'any item on the windscreen that is not needed' now constitutes a reason for rejection.

If that is what they are saying, then it's very poor advice.

^^This^^

If it's outside the swept area the garage is spouting BS.
It's not exactly difficult to position it so that it doesn't encroach.

Plus, of course, the wording hasn't actually changed. If the tax disc is failing now, it should have been failing when it was required.

It's a long time ago for me, and things change, but I believe the wording was "except an excise disc", in the circumstances we are discussing.

So, the disc had an exemption !

Just to put that into context, you believed the bloke on the forum, too.

No I didn't, but he was insistent, and on the off chance he was correct if I'm breaking the law I prefer to know, so it is easy to ask here.

Things do change with time, my father used to tell me about when you could exceed the speed limit to do an overtake, and after some research Von (remember him ?) said he was correct.
