Driver has only the standard B1 car licence

Buys a vehicle (17 seat minibus) with a plated weight of 3850kg

wants it MOTd but garage is only class7 (i.e. upto 3.5T)

owner wants to reduce seats to 6 (inc driver) and it seems will have to downrate it to class 7

owner has been offered stickers for the VIN plate but at £120 I said speak the VOSA first....

Do minibuses have a GVW (MAM) limit applied?

Its possibly an ex-police riot van

Personally (having a C1 licence) id tax it HGV and have it MOT'd at a HGV test center

someone I know had this exact issue with his ex police v8 riot van.

I cant remember the specifics but he did say he hopes no one actually weighs in to realise its over 3.5t so could be option 1 you've posted.

the "3.85t" isnt what it weighs though, just the maximum it can legally weigh fully loaded

Over 16 seats and you need a psv license as far as I'm aware

Whilst the owner is removing seats down to 6......

Category D1

You can drive vehicles with:

no more than 16 passenger seats
a maximum length of 8 metres
a trailer up to 750kg
Category D1+E

You can drive D1 category vehicles with a trailer over 750kg, but the trailer - when fully loaded - can’t weigh more than the vehicle.

The combined weight of both can’t exceed 12,000kg.

The D1 (101) licence covers it for no profit (inc PAYE), to drive for Hire and Reward youd have to take the test (and DCPC)

Im sure the HGV class (3.85t) (over class 7) applies to vans as a big motorhome can be driven on a B1 licence
