Long story short - good friend of the wife has got a husband with terminal cancer. All very tragic, only 50, two year old daughter, not much cash etc.

We're trying to help out where we can. Being a car obsessed tool, the wife asked me to help sell their car for them as they've got other things on their minds. No worries there, happy to help out.

It turns out that when the friend was told I'd help, she promptly stuck the car in their grarage and cancelled the insurance thinking "it's off the road, I don't need to insure it". Money is very tight so she needed the policy refund. This was about Tuesday last week.

I found out on Saturday when I went over to move the car onto my drive to sell it for them. I didn't say anything 'cos I didn't want to add to their worries. I got home and promptly added it to my multicar policy. It didn't cost much (15 year old Ka) and hopefully I'll be able to cancel it soon anyway.

So, the question is - are they likely to get a fine for the 4 or 5 days that it was off cover? I want to minimise the hassle in their life, but if the best thing is for them to get back onto the insurers and, essentially get the cover reinstated, then I'll tell them to get cracking.

If, however, they are likely to "get away with it" for the 4 days, then I'll just leave things as they are and they can carry on with worrying about all of the other things they've got on their plates at the moment. The wife's friend is still the RK as the car's not sold yet.

All advice appreciated.

It's possible, but very unlikely. They usually don't bother with short periods such as that.
