The picture above isn't ideal, as the hatched area has a BROKEN line.
However, the slip roads onto UK motorways have a solid white line bordering the hatched area, separating slip road traffic from the traffic in lane 1 of the motorway.

Do you see people entering the area often, in order to join the m/way quicker? Especially at peak times?
Do you do it yourself?

Are PH'ers aware that the penalty is an endorsable ticket?

Yeah, it's pretty annoying IMHO. Most irritating when you merge into lane 1 behind a truck and can't get into lane 2 because of a long line of muppets diving across the white line and straight into lane 2.

I didn't realise it was endorcable, but then it doesn't affect me as I don't do it (as far as I remember).

There is a hatched area (M40 northbound at Hangar Lane) that I often cross, but I think that's got broken lines. The reason I mention it particularly is that I'm not sure because the lines on the road are so fd that it's more confusing than anything else.

Speaking of which, the same place southbound has diamond shapes instead of lines as lane markings. I don't remember those from the highway code (or anywhere else for that matter).

Is the endorsability due to the hatching or the solid white line?

The solid white lines...

Hatchings on roads can be entered, if safe to do so, provided that the line bordering the area is broken..

That was an experiment to discourage drivers "swooping" straight from lane 3 onto the exit slip road. The idea was to create road markings that looked as though you weren't really supposed to cross them, but within the width restriction of a single lane marking. There wasn't enough lane space to use the "dragon's teeth" hatch markings.

Apparently it was very successful.

A rare case of an idea from the Highways Agency that actually worked, and with no detrimental side affects.

That'll be the A40 then

It is hatched, and I do cross it regularly because the numpties in front of me refuse to do the 40mph limit!

Didn't know it was an endorsable offence, but I really don't see the point of crossing it early anyway. Oh wait, yes I do - it obviously caresses people's low IQ.

You've got to be brave to cross into the hatched areas, as this seems to be the place that all the debris collects.

Yes I know, but shirley that means they may not be particularly helpful. I would do away with a good deal of this road painting nonsense anyhow. I really think it has become greatly overdone in some areas.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Don't really understand what you mean Dave..

My example is this; A hatched area in the middle of a road that 'protects' a car waiting to turn right, shouldn't be used to overtake another car, if someone is sat in the middle of the road waiting to turn right.

However, if nobody is turning right and you are overtaking a vehicle (which has commited to go straight on), there is no reason why you can't enter that hatched area to complete the manoeuver...

another example...is if you are THE car wanting to turn right at that junction, you can indicate your intentions as you are going down the road and move into the hatched area, prior to the junction, without braking too hard...thus allowing the vehicle behind you to continue unhindered..

if that all makes sense

Did a ride and drive day a couple of years ago. Used a serving police officer from East Anglia region.

Asked the question and was told *in detail* exactly what the rules were. NEVER done anything daft since and yes, I do know its an endorsible offence....

As a retort though - how many people overtake (when its 100% safe to do so) on hashed sections, when NOT bordered by solid white lines? Not strictly an offence and on many roads the only way to pass...???

actually I am a whimp and almost never overtake on hashed sections - old habits die hard, which is probably not a bad thing in reality!

I've been overtaking on the hatches with broken lines on them for a couple of years now but only when it's safe. I do it to get past all the daydreaming numpties who won't ever reach nsl speeds.

Everybody who crosses into the hatched area on the m/way SHOULD get at least 2 punctures - that'll slow 'em up !!!!
(And make it easier for SC to give 'em their invite to the Trafpol Xmas party)

Trouble is, whilst most of us know they hatched areas with broken lines are fair game under the right circumstances, the outraged gestures, light flashing and horn sounding you get from the rest of the muppets around you tend to show that a good section of the public are clueless. Hmm...no change there then.

Street - can you confirm whether it makes any difference if the hatchings are stripes or chevrons?

I'm sure I saw this recently somewhere else, but the highway code (www.highwaycode.gov.uk/10.shtml#109 ) says:-
  • If the area is bordered by a broken white line, you should not enter the area unless it is necessary and you can see that it is safe to do so.

  • If the area is marked with diagonal stripes and bordered by solid white lines, you should not enter it except in an emergency.

  • If the area is marked with chevrons and bordered by solid white lines you MUST NOT enter it except in an emergency.

i.e. no "MUST NOT" against "If the area is marked with diagonal stripes and bordered by solid white lines"...

On the subject of white lines.........

Common in Europe, but only seen here at the northern end of the Dartford tunnels - Solid white/dashed white lane marker between lanes 1 & 2 to prevent morons carvng across to take the exit. Should be more common and heavily policed. Should also have spikes embedded in it !
