These things, second hand, sell for £40 on ebay. Obviously less than a fixed penalty price and with no penalty points.

Are they any good though?

I've no real experience with them whatsoever, but see them in cars that I've stopped for speeding; detected on my pro-laserII..!

I've got a GPS thingy and a detector. The latter has gone off about twice, both false alarms. I use them as an aid to my eyeballs not as a replacement.

I've got a mate who drives everywhere over the limit and has a detector. It is only a matter of time..... .

I have that exact model in my Sunday blat-around-the lanes car. It's OK for telling which Gatsos are live, and which aren't, but that's about it.

In a daily driver, it's useless, especially in built up areas. It bleeps every couple of minutes (traffic lights, etc.)

I've never had the laser alarm on it go off, despite driving past many mobile cameras, so either the laser alert doesn't work, or the operators were sticking to the "prior opinion" rules.

I use the speed camera database with TomTom3 on a PDA and it's excellent. On sunday we had a very spirited drive with other exotica through central london, the PDA was excellent in telling me where cameras were so I could concentrate on the road.

Used to use a similar one in the truck. It was very useful for warning whether the scamera at chicklade was live or not. If it wasn't keep the right foot down, and we'll be no inconvenience to anyone. If it was back off, climb down through the box, and try to ignore the comments and gestures of car drivers as they came past after nearly crashing into the back of me.
No replacement for eyeball MK1 though, using it more now speeding enforcement officers have "upped the ante"...hang on, I'm doing a ton, and so is that car at least a mile back......wonder what he could be?

I wonder how many police setups are prepared to detect active jamming?

I know you're not supposed to do it, but do you think they'd know if you did?

laser detectors are too little, too late.

SC: I have two totally opposing views about you!

a) you're a real nice guy who has the best interests of us PH'ers at heart

b) your're a government plant, infiltrating websites because you are paid to do so, by ingratiating yourself with MOP.

I hope so much that you are the real McCoy, option "a", because I trust your opinions. I don't know what I'll do if you're a "b"... but I will lose what little faith I have. Are you A, or B ?

Please don't be insulted by me asking, but in reality I guess you won't ever answer "b", even if you are. That's the problem we all face huh?

So I think the only answer is to have a meet up one day & get totally and then make up my mind. And that goes for Tony, and the rest of the BiB too.

Sorry to sound paranoid, but when the authorities ARE out to get you, it pays to be suspicious.

Drive safe, and SC (and TonyR) lets meet up on bikes in summer.

Ive got a an original Road Angel. It's superb for identifying Gatso and regularly used speed check locations. Very usefull warning when your concentration is less than 100% I don't plug in the Laser detector as it's quite cumbersome.

I use it when blatting about at the weekends and on unfamiliar roads.

Last time I got pulled by Trafpol he did point at it and say "don't warn you about Police cars right behind you do they"

Just out of interest, why are you suspicious?

Hiya Carl...

I'm definately an 'A' type person..

The thought of me "ingratiating myself with MOP" would have my Inspector reaching for the Glenfiddich..

I'm not normally this 'public friendly' as i'm very untrusting and usually manage to see the 'bad side' of things all too easily. Surprise surprise, I've been known to collect the odd complaint in my service..

But seriously, I have a huge interest in driving, in vehicles, in road safety and the laws....and find 'interaction' on Pistonheads very useful to me in my day-to-day work. In turn, I hope that I give a little back...(like the other BiB on here do too)

Well, can I say I'm not the biggest fan of the Police despite having a couple of old school friends who are Plod. However, I have found the advice on here invaluable and it's helped me understand the point of view of BiBs and also see them as real people.

Thanks to you and the other BiBs for your input. It is definitely a contribution to road safety. BiB comments on here have made me rethink my driving style and I've even bought a copy of "Roadcraft".

Now having said all of that, I reserve the right to mention donuts and make Plod jokes whenever the occasion demands.

cheers
