I would like to buy a car that is not currently roadworthy for restoration. This may take a month or two so obviously I wouldn't want to pay tax and insurance until it is ready to hit the road.

What would be the correct procedure to have the car registered as SORN from day 1?

Thanks.

Just go to:

https://www.gov.uk/make-a-sorn

Click on the green "Apply now" button

That will bring you to the page below. On this page, click on "I don't have the V11 reminder, just the registration certificate or the new keeper supplement"

Clicking on that will bring up the new dialogue box below. Click on the "New keeper (using V5C/2 new keeper supplement document reference number)"

Clicking on the "new keeper" section will bring up the final dialogue box below. Fill in with the reference number from the V5C/2 and the car's registration number and click on "continue" to finish off the rest

OP will struggle to declare SORN until the V5C has his/her name on it... DVLA have a standard letter stating "you cannot declare SORN on a vehicle of which you are not the RK".

Buy & keep off road until the V5C lands on the doormat, then SORN it wink ; SORNing a project car is eminently possible (and the "built-in delays" in the
system
*ahem* are far greater than a few days' discrepancy - think in terms of the middle of the second month after the last VED expired before enforcement kicks in) smile .

Not anymore. You can tax or declare SORN online the moment you purchase the vehicle with the reference number on the V5C/2. That's how the new system works.

It's easier and quicker to do it here :-

https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle

when you're doing the V5 thing. There's a box near the end to tick if you want to make a SORN.
