Bit of advise- speeding
Discussion
Best course of action is to take the £100 fine and 3 points (unless that's going to take you over your 12 point limit then you will go to court for a totting up ban). You might well get a Speed Awareness Course depending on that police forces threshold for allowing them.
Unless you think spending (wasting) time and money on trying to avoid penalty for the consequences of your actions is a worthwhile activity, put it down to experience and get on with your life.

Out of interest what speed was showing on your speedo?
LOL - yeah 83-85 speedo more like. That's what I always ask folks who get tickets for "only 36 in a 30" - so you thought you were doing 40 and only got a ticket for 36 I'd say that's a good deal!
OP - almost 0%. You can read up on www.pepipoo.com but unless you've balls of steel probably best to just take it and move on.

I got a ticket for 81 in a 70 a few years ago. I was actually doing an indicated 70. Despite having crystal clear evidence I found the process such a monumental pain in the ass (8 lost days of work) that I don't know if I would do it again.
If you actually were speeding then as well as wasting your own time you'll be wasting the court's and they'll probably give you the harshest penalty possible to put other people off defending themselves.
In my case... First I had to go view the evidence (video) at their offices. Then 6 court visits to set a date (procurator fiscal weren't ready the first 5 times!), 7th visit was actual court session where they listened to evidence from the single civilian in the van and then let me speak for 2 minutes before telling me the court is running late and we have to stop and set another date...
Luckily in the meantime they finally stopped ignoring my emails where I pointed out that they can use their own video to calculate my speed (there were distance/time markers so it was easy). They accepted my speed was 64mph and finally stopped their nonsense.
Also for minor offences they won't give you a copy of the evidence. You can only view it at their offices. Although for anyone in this position - if you struggle to see their TV screen then I would recommend bringing your own laptop for viewing the DVD. That's what I did. I'm very computer illiterate and clumsy though and when my fingers accidentally slipped on the CTRL+C, CTRL+V keys I have no idea what happened but I was able to view the video at home

Hand in your PH card and head over to Mumsnet

Indeed, this place is getting worse:
"Op, you were speeding, bend over!"
"26 in a 20
thats 30% - you should be killed!""someone parked a petrol car in an electric space
""someone overtook me!"
MTFU! Get a straight 6/V6, V8, four pot twin turbo, get yourself down to Shell for some V-Power and enjoy the noises and smells of an internal combustion engine while we still can!!!
FFS!

ker you are.

ker you are. Here is the exact quote from the OP:
"Got caught speeding at 79 in a 70- so right on the limit I think!?"
So there we have the problem. For some reason somebody doesn't think that the 70mph limit actually means 70mph.
The poster was simply pointing out that no, he wasn't "right on the limit" he was 9mph over it which is 12% over the limit.
There is a much more likely explanation.
The poster meant that 79 is right on the limit as in 10%+2 for prosecution. Not an actual limit, not the speed limit a turn of phrase meaning 1 mph lower would be very unlikely to get a prosecution.
How hard is it?
Bert

For me, I have a personal limit which is is really no more than 25mph over the posted limit for any sustained period, as 30 over is the magic number where it's essentially an automatic ban. Anything under, it's just points, and try not to get caught four times within three years. Anything more exuberant is for quick, clear sighted and researched bursts with no chance of being seen. My licence has been clean for over 20 years using these principles
A magistrate who was on the same fun drive as myself recently advised me that in her district, getting caught doing 110 would get a very short (week or two) ban with the right show of sorrow and apology, while if you get done for totting up, there are minimums of (three or six, not sure which) months, so in her opinion, it was better to either get caught within the course limits, or go nuts and take a short ban! That day, I think we all did very well to avoid any attention from plod, who seemed to be on the wrong parts of each road we had traveled!

OP - relevant info
My offer of course, points or court has a guide on the back (Lancashire police, I have no idea if it differs)
70MPH limit Upto and including 86MPH - Course offered if eligible.
Unless you are 110% sure that you can prove the device was incorrect I would be hoping for a course offer. If you have already done a course in the last 3 years, its points.
