Hi all, quick question for you legal people! We have a customer's car in our workshop this afternoon for window tinting, we have been told buy a third party ( the guy who fitted it.) That along with tracking device and camera's he also installed sound recording equipment! My question is as the customer has not told us or asked permission to record in our workshop is this legal. The recording devices are aparrently triggered by a motion sensor so we won't be able to avoid them. Thanks in advance Jonny.

Why would you have a problem with this? If everything is above board there should be nothing untoward on the recordings.

If it's in their business premises without their knowledge then it could be recording all sorts of commercially sensitive information. If the customer worked in the industry and used information gained would it be industrial espionage?

Because I don't particularly like the idea of our customer listening to descussions about our buisiness, finance or details of other customer's and pricing. We are a family business too, so if we were to discuss private matters I wouldn't want anyone having recordings of it!

maybe ask the guy who fitted it if disconnecting the battery disables the recording system.

Problem solved and its legit because you didn't want to break any electics whilst working on the car

Stick a laptop/tablet in the car while you're working on the car and either have some noisy pr0n or that 10 hour Nyan cat youtube video running on full blast.

All sorts of worms in this can.

First, you could ask the customer.

But... he might be a bit miffed that the tracker installer has blabbed about it, breaking customer confidentiality.

I was going to suggest some Metallica via crap speakers but these options work too

Do you have business meetings inside customer cars?

Is it a bus with 20+ windows? 3 days seems like a bit of a piss take to be honest...

Take the memory card out and wipe it before giving the car back. When questioned by the customer the answer is "What camera?".

It's not no it's a defender 110 with 15 Windows 5 have to be removed film applied and fully dried before 're fitting. I expect you'll know what that entails given your previous judgements!

So many vehicles have dash cams fitted now which record sound. Are you really going to stop working on these vehicles? I would get used to it as it will only increase.

If a business asked me to remove my dash cam prior to my car going in I would automatically be wary of them and would probably go elsewhere.
