Public Transport Kills!
Discussion
I've just been researching some cause of death statistics to help me with a newspaper letter feud I'm having with somebody.
Did you know that around 3400 people are killed in "transport accidents" (as opposed to Motor vehicle traffic accidents) every year??!! Give me a car any day, at least I'm largely in control of my own destiny! Perhaps transport 2000 would like to comment on that statistic?
It's sad to see the peak in deaths amongst young male drivers though - calm down lads you're giving us ALL a bad name. I wonder how many of those younger deaths contribute to the overall "speed related" figure that has resulted in ALL of us being persecuted by the government?
Around 4300 people are killed in accidental falls!
Interesting statistics here www.statistics.gov.uk/STATBASE/xsdataset.asp?More=Y&vlnk=3731&All=Y&B2.x=78&B2.y=4
It's from 2000 but was updated this year.

Reg,
Willing to be corrected but the way I read the table is that transport accidents (cause code E800-E848)accounted for 3416 deaths.
Of which there is a subset called motor vehicle accidents (codes E810-E819) which accounted for 3198.
Therefore 218 transport related but not motor vehicle accidents.
Does that make sense?
Seeing as a death can only have one cause according to the footnotes how does someone who ends up under a train get allocated? According to coroners verdict I guess, eg suicide/accident.
Have transferred data (edit>copy>special paste) into Excel. If get time will check a bit more to see if my interpretation stacks up.
Hope that helps.
