A friend of mine has had a company car for the last 18 months which was / is insured by the company. However he is now getting a toy for the weekends which will require its own insurance policy.

before getting the Company car he had his own car and had built up 8/9 years NCD. However he's forgotten who his last Insurance Company was. Is there anyway he can find out so that he can contact them for proof of NCD?

If he did not have insurance on a car in the mean time, that will have expired. When I stopped the insurance for a car, I got a letter at the time stating that I could keep the NCD for two years.

It's only been 18 months so if he can find out soon he should hopefully be ok.

You can't keep NCD, it's not yours. It's completely up to the insurance company you next insure with what NCD they'll give you based on what you had last time.

There is a convention that your old NCD will be accepted by a new company for a period of 2 years. But it's just a convention.

The only way you can be given a commitment for keeping NCD is if the company 'giving' it says they'll honour that for a period of x years should you decide to come back to them. They can't give promises on behalf of other insurers.

Ummmm...ok.... but that's NOT what I asked confused

Can he, as a first step, find out WHICH insurance company he was with so that he can contact them to discuss?

You can complete a data subject access request from the mib for your insurance history. It will cost £10 but may be your only option

Surely if he has Internet banking he can just go through his bank statements (same for CC's)

My bank and CC co's have statements going back a good 4+ years available as PDF's on my login area

He just needs to think really hard and if he still can't remember, then look down a list of insurers, i can pretty much gurantee it will jump out at him.

There's a long list at the end of this pdf

If he bought it online there's a good chance that the details are in his e-mail somewhere.
