Spotted this on the otherside of the dual carriageway when the opposite traffic cleared - A34 heading towards M3. According to my dashcam GPS I was approaching 90 - can this van zap me from there? Is this a 3 point offence?

No - it is trapping people in the other carriageway.

Be careful of the van that parks on the bridge nearby in future. Also a couple of plain cars are sometimes around. Basically the police have wrecked what was once a nice road.

I'm not trolling, but I'm just wondering what makes this dual carriageway a nice road, and how doing only 70 can spoil that?

If you need to ask that, you are probably on the wrong forum.
Please
Actually, if you ask that in SP&L, you are probably on exactly the right subforum, nowadays. frown

Thanks that's a relief - I'm going to get up earlier for work in future! I think it's a nice road because it usually has little congestion during rush hour which makes it tempting to press on. I guess that's why it's a camera van hot spot.

I think it's that your respondent isn't talking about the pleasure of meeting the challenge of the road, rather the utilitarian need for getting from one place to another, swifty.

It helps to remember that this is predominately a site for car enthusiasts rather than driving enthusiasts, reflecting the same bias in the general population.

Hampshire are quite keen to catch you for speeding, sadly.

Far from it! I enjoy hoofing it when I can, but living in rural east anglia, a dual is the last place I get my kicks. I appreciate that some duals might have been safer bets than the A14 in the past.

It is quite possible for camera vans to capture people going in either direction on a DC. They are more than capable of detecting over the central reservation.

They enforce both carriageways. You might be lucky though.

They seem to be having one of their periodic A34 crackdowns at the moment. Reckon that'll be parked up on the verge by the central reservation in the 50 zone by the Winnall roundabout during rush hour soon enough.

wrong!

In the position of the op's car in the image it will not be measured in most vans. 2 seconds later at 90mph will put the op in a position where the vehicle speed will be measured.

In some vans equipment is installed that works out of the front of the van but that doesn't seem to be in use in this image.

If the op slowed before coming into view of the rear of the van there will be no action but if 90 was maintained then it is likely a ticket will be in the post...unless of course the operatior wasn't operating at that time.

Okay, I'll bite - How is it a trap?

It's a dual carriageway, you know the maximum speed you should be doing, so if you get caught driving above that limit, how have you been trapped?

If you get caught by CCTV shoplifting have you been trapped?

If you get caught by CCTV committing criminal damage have you been trapped?

In all of those cases, if you don't break the Law then you don't have any problems - Break the Law and get spotted and you're in trouble.

And how is it any different being caught speeding by a camera van at the side of the road, to getting caught speeding by a patrol car following you? - Or is that a trap too?

Don't go thinking I'm some "goody two shoes - Holier than thou!" person who never exceeds the speed limits BTW!

I've had points on My licence for speeding at various times over the 30 years since I passed My test (All of them from speeding out on the open road), the first of which came from a Police officer hiding behind a bridge with a radar gun whilst two of his colleagues waited at the next roundabout to pull Me over (remember those days?).

I've had points from being stopped by marked Police cars, unmarked Police cars and from a camera van on a bridge - And the only person to blame for My being caught speeding, no matter how I was caught, was Myself!

You might be alright, I saw a camera van too late on my side of the road doing 70 odd in a stupidly placed 50 zone. No letter. Maybe he sneezed.

You realise you've contradicted yourself in that post right?

You cannot say I am wrong. You can say I maybe wrong based on the van looking at rears in the other carriageway however my experience is that they will only be focused on the other lane.

Carry on the hyperbole if you want though.

Visibility is very good in most places after Oxford and has a number of long shallow curves and hills that makes progressing nice. Apart from rush hour it is pretty clear as well. I wouldn't call it a drivers road per se but if you need to get from A to B without the time for some backroad hooning then you can choose a lot worse.
