Kids riding in the boot - how much bother??
Discussion
Entirely theoretical because I can't find a 7 seater I actually want/can afford (plus I was involved in a head on collision as a child riding in the boot so I'm fully aware of the dangers.)
But for those rare occasions I need to transport more people what's the offence and penalty if I didn't have enough seats?
ETA having reread it I can see it could be construed that I was seriously considering it - I'm not.

From a bit of Googling it's 3 point and usual fine. I found links to local press websites where 'Police crackdown on...' etc.
Not sure what code you'd have to declare to insurance companies but I'd have thought it would load a premium up as overloaded cars seems to be a 'crash for cash' tactic and they might hit you harder than an SP30. That's purely a guess...
O/T - I'm impressed with your post. For someone who has that many posts over that many months and you ask that question... I'll dust off the popcorn machine

I remember people piling on and in a mk1 Fiesta going from a campsite to a pub. I declined the offer of being the third person standing on the back bumper and holding onto the roof rack...
Quick dash across a couple of fields as they slowly trundled on the winding road around them, and I was supping a pint before they made it into the car park.

My brother and me used to sometimes sit in the back of the family Austin Maxi back in the day. Waving to other drivers out the back window, it was a treat.
Daft thing is, I wouldn't even dream of letting mine sit in the back like that. How times change.
When our family got too big for the Austin a35 back in the sixties (two parents, four kids, a dog and occasionally a Granny), my Dad bought a Morris van instead. We used to fight for the space next to the back door so we could stare out the windows.

The offence is contrary to section 40A(c) RTA 1988. 3 points for your 1st offence. 6+ month ban for a second offence within 3 years.
Thanks. Just reread my op and it does look like I'm seriously considering this: I'm not, it's just idle curiosity.
We used to get 2 adults, 3 kids and a dog in an MG Midget when I was a kid.
And probably stopped at the pub on the way home...Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
