I got caught speeding and im a plonker...78 in a 50
Discussion
Hi guys, i've been very stupid
I'm not trying to get out of it, I admitted to the officer immediately. I'm just curious as to what to expect in the way of punishment.
I was travelling home from an interview (just finished university) in Hastings and found myself northbound on the A20 Sidcup bypass at around 20:30 on a weekday. Somehow, I failed to notice the speed limit change. What I did somehow notice what the police bike parked on the slip road of the A222.
He pulled me over not far into the residential area. At that point the road is three lanes and represents a motorway.
The officer said it's most likely to result in a court appearance and possible ban!
I have (*had) a clean licence and, like most people, have NEVER been in trouble for anything with the law for anything.
What do people think i'm in for?
(Im from ooop north so the area is by no means familiar)

I can't help with the possible/likely penalty, hopefully agtlaw will post the sentencing guidelines table, which may give an indication.
I'm not going to lecture you about speeding (some here will). We've all done it, all do it, sometimes it's inappropriate and sometimes it's dangerous as well. If you're worried, speak to a motoring solicitor and avoid idiots giving advice on the Internet. Unfortunately, speaking to a decent solicitor may cost a decent chunk of cash. You do get what you pay for.

Very good advice. Can you afford to take a ban? If not, it's at least worth spending some money to try and defend it.I'm not going to lecture you about speeding (some here will). Thank you for the advice, from those guidelines it looks like I could well be facing a ban if i'm unlucky or 6 points if I am!
I'm probably able to take the hit from a ban if it's less than a month, however while job hunting, having a car is a great advantage. I definitely can't afford a lawyer unless they head for a year ban or prison
I still can't believe it happened to be honest, there's no way i'd do that knowingly, so annoyed with myself!

Not sure that's a great defence...78 in a 50 is just into court territory.

Is it less than two years since your first test pass? If so, then you're almost certainly going back to L-plates.
Otherwise, it might be a ban, it might be a b
king and serious points. I'll leave it to others to suggest whether suiting-up or a contrite letter is more likely to help you. Look on the bright side, though - you were coming back from an interview, so the suit must be clean and the shoes shiny...iamAlegend said:
Haha, probably not a great defence, no, but the truth!
Would points for "due care and attention" sit better on your licence? Really...?

No, but it might get the magistrate a little more on your side.Assuming you don't want to investigate a technical defence then if offered a fixed penalty, pay it. Deal with this case using "Signed For" post or if given the option then online.
If you prefer points then do not attend the first hearing in person.
If you don't mind a short ban then attend the first hearing.
The Yorkshire guideline for 78/50 is a 7 day ban. The national guideline is on the link posted above.

Why would you not take the 7 day ban instead of 6 points? If you prefer points then do not attend the first hearing in person.

Pretending you are ashamed of yourself has worked twice for me already, 138 in a 70 and 105, also in a 70.
138 was 9 points (and license revocation under new drivers act) but I was only 20 so could retake my test and get back on the road asap. It could have been a LONG ban. 105 in a 70 got me a 21 day ban and £150 fine.
78 in a 50? depending on circumstances I think you'll get away with 3 points and a fine. Just let a single tear run down your face and tell them you'll never* do it again.
Good luck!

Most insurers will quote you with 6 points, some with quite a small loading. Loads of insurers will not insure you at all if you've been disqualified within the last 5 years, or if they will, often with a much larger loading.I got caught speeding four times over about fourty years of driving.90 mph on the motorway and once in Linonshire in a 30 zone after midnight.
You are not the only plonker.Coppers who stopped me on the motorway never a warning three points and a fine. One copper had a lot off because I slowed down after i noticed them in the inside lane. They followed me for a bit maybe hoping for a bit if a chase.
Strange people coppers.

Just out of interest, he said the whole 'anything you do say may be given in evidence' and asked me if i had anything to say, i said 'not really' (my usual response for no) and he put 'not really' in the box, is this a bad thing?
