Hi everyone, I had a call today from my broker ahead of the renewal for my Z4C.

Went through the usual questions about convictions, accidents and disabilities then got to modifications!

I said it had stainless centre and rear exhaust sections, and I haven't heard since! It is surely just a sensible route to go! (And it sounds much better laugh)

Would love to hear from anyone else who has had an issue with this!

Don't think I will bother telling them I use winters on my E46 325ti - duty of disclosure arises at renewal so as long as I have the winters off before 24 April renewal each year they don't need to know!

Would also be interesting to get a view from our new insurance partner!

Hmm last time I looked at the MX5 for doing this it was about a £60 increase.

As for disclosure that runs for any modification throughout the policy not at renewal. Winter wheels and tyres though for many should be okay under the ABI Winter tyre Commitment

I think you'll find you have to declare any modifications to your insurer as soon as they happen, not when the policy is up for renewal.

When I cup a SS cat back exhaust on my Mini I was just asked did it sound much louder, I said no as it was not much Louder, no increase on insurance. But as previously stated tell them when you fit them.

Right up until that last bit, I was going to ask if it was just a direct replacement exhaust that happened to be stainless, or if it was an aftermarket "modification" exhaust. And the answer is clearly that it's a mod...

If that was true, why don't you just take off the exhaust just before you phone to renew, and then refit after you've hung up rolleyes

Make sure its listed on your policy or the police could take the car off you for no insurance. The boy racers are hating it at the moment as they never declare mids so spend a lot of time walking home.

totally dependent on which insurer/broker you use. On greenlight I didn't have to pay extra to add aftermarket alloys, on footman james they upped my excess.

Case by case/insurer by insurer, all varies.

If you had not told the insurance company why would there be no insurance? The policy would be valid and on MID. That is what the police will check. Those that have to walk home having had the car impounded will not have had any valid insurance.

Well that's a bit subjective isn't it?
Sounds like you were talking to a complete mug.

I know what they will check, I've done it.

Stop car
Notice mods
Call insurance company
No cover for modded car
Arrange a recovery truck

Job done, false statement to obtain insurance.

Are the insurance companies available for calls 24 / 7 now?

Why not describe it as a 'long life exhaust'? hehe

When I added an exhaust to the Scooby it was all about the performance increase and with no increase, it became a cosmetic mod and added nothing to the premium.

Saying that, that was a while back - since then I've realised that modding is a mug's game wink

I was running about in a 1.8t Audi A3 a few years back, hybrid turbo, full custom exhaust, bigger brakes, uprated anti roll bars and coilovers and it was less than an 80 quid increase on my premium and that was purely based on the turbo change, everything else made no difference to the premium BUT I still had to declare them.

I have an old Maserati with a ss exhaust as there are no originals left.

Any modifications ?

Yes ss exhaust as there are no originals left.

We would only replace it with standard equipment

But there aren't any left.

Em err we could only replace it with an original one ......

Cost me about £50 extra when I put a sports exhaust on my TVR and informed my insurers. No real worry there.

A fun game I like to play is to declare modifications in the most petrolhead way and see how confused the call centre staff get. Trying to explain an intake kit and a remap on my old 370Z was fantastic; we went from exhaust, to blueprinted engine, to supercharging, to something else before settling on "induction kit" and "engine remap".

I know the folks on the other end of the phone tend not to be car enthusiasts but it's interesting when you read out the full product name of whatever you've bought, only to be asked if it's something completely different. Again, I know they read from scripts but there's also a childish amusement to be had from being asked whether a VX220 is a 5-door car, and if it is a petrol or diesel.

In that situation many insurers would give you the last known UK price for the part in question (although saying that when you say there are no "originals" left is there any on the used market? as some insurers now include the option to use used parts in the repair of a vehicle).

Had a similar experience trying to insure my MX5 with a broker associated with this site.
First they ask if it's not petrol or diesel, then if it was an estate or hatchback!
Final straw was telling me the reason their quote was 4 times the amount I paid them to insure a modified 2.8turbo Saab was because the MX5 was quicker!
