2 hours potentially saved per year....what is the fuss about
Discussion
There seems to be a lot of b
hing about how inappropriate the 70 mph limit it and how it should be higher. I agree that it could be higher but why all the noise and hysterics?
On average UK drivers do 8000 miles per year. On average 20% of driven miles are on motorways. That is 1600 miles per year. At 70 that is 22 hours. At 80 it comes down to 20. So 2 hours saved. Is it really worth getting worked up about saving on average 2 hours per year? Who are these super people that are so busy that they need to save 2 hours?
Some people seem to have no perspective.

The whole raise the motorway limit thing rears it's head every few years.
The police are in general, against it, mainly because if you raise the limit to 80 (the speed people do anyway) then a lot of those people will then be doing 90.
They don't seem to be too bothered normally about people doing 80 as a result...

Realistically you'll only average 50mph on a motorway so that's 32 hours of driving, so with a 80mph limit that may increase to being able to average 55mph, so saving a whopping 3 hours !

I don't smoke and never have, but have no wish to persecute them either.

Arguing about the merits of increasing limits based on time saved seems to focus on people who drive or ride purely because they need to get from where they are to where they want to be. These people have no interest in driving, it is a means to an end. Although I appreciate there are one hell of a lot of these people.
If I have to use the roads (which I do as part of my job, irrespective of personal choice) then I would rather not be bored witless doing it. I get to where I'm going way quicker than most because I don't do 70 or 80, but that doesn't stop me seeing that 80 is still a perfectly sensible limit to have in the law.
Why do you keep banging on about this?

Because the pair of you are talking garbage. If nobody cared about drivers doing 80 then why is 79 the start point for grief? And if anyone mentions an unspoken acceptance by the plod that 85 or less is OK in a 70 then all the shouts of 'nonsence' crop up on here from all those 'Law is the Law' sycophants.
When we can all do 85 (bit naughty, but hey, the 70 is a joke) because the State are happy to turn a blind eye, then I couldn't care a less if the limit is 70 or 80. It ain't gonna happen.
There are bound to be statistics available on how much of a difference the extra 10mph makes to the number of accidents.
From a personal point of view, I've been involved far too many times in removing people from smashed vehicles and my anecdotal evidence is only that you stand much more chance of surviving and much less chance of being badly injured if you are travelling more slowly rather than more quickly.
But it's personal choice, isn't it; I still travel at f
king stupid speeds on the continent and on closed roads...

king stupid speeds on the continent and on closed roads...On a purely personal basis, an 80mph limit with the usual 10% + 2 would be quite useful. I normally run at 73 to 78mph as I find that a good balance between getting where you want to go in reasonable time and fuel consumption*, an 80mph limit would make my speed legal and give a margin to speed up to complete an overtake and get out of someones way without risking a ticket.
