I witnessed the whole thing from the southbound carrageway as it happened.

Car on northbound flipped over smashed into the central reservation and body was deposited there as well This happened metres from my car. 2 other cars hit and one on my side of the carrageway (probably out of shock) hit the central res as well.

This happened metres from my car as I was doing 65 in the inside lane. I pulled over striahgt away and called police. Some motorway maintaince guys caught up in it and did an exceelent job sorting the traffic. After about 10 mins we had a fire engine and 5 mins after that an ambulance and several of our finest BiB. Waited on the other side for around 40 mins to give my statement, got to work and they sent me home as I am in a bit of shock and suffereing from hypothermia from hanging around at the side of the road outside the car.

to the bib and all the rest - its amazing to see human spirit pulling together like that in such horrible circumstances. I think the guy died as you dont hit the ground like that and walk away laughing... Plus the A38 Northbound is closed now so I guess they are doing forensics.

Heart goes out to the family. I dont know what caused it but no-one deserves that. If I get anyone who saw the aftermath starting to go on about "bet he was speeding" etc then I will probably have to hold myself back from ing them....

There are not many vehicles that 'flip over' on motorways that are doing 70mph and under.....

I've attended many collisions on the motorway network....for several years as a reponse driver and the last 6 months in RPU.....

The only two cars to flip over, had been estimated at 105 and 120 respectively.....

Of course it's all relative as we don't know the facts of this collision and perhaps might never know in the public domain.

Actually one of my colleuges flipped a 03 reg vauxhall astra a year or so back from a tyre blowout on a stright road.

if the other vehicle had been doing something stupid who is to tell? there are many ways a vehicle can flip. yank the steering at 60mph and it will roll...

Absolutely....however, you're not likely to be arrested for having a tyre blowout...

Yes....Painfully obvious...

But if another car has a blow out, collides with your car and that driver dies...YOU DON'T GET ARRESTED

I was hit by another car once which caused me to flip, speed wasnt a relevant factor in either vehicles.

Still your comment puzzles me, how can you be so sure when you do not know the circumstances ??

Maybe he was on the phone, maybe he was drinking a can of coke, maybe he was pissed, maybe he was eating a donut or eating an apple, speed doesnt always kill.

There are not many vehicles that 'flip over' on motorways .......period!

The couple that do, is perhaps due to a design flaw?

Rubbish - a car can flip at far far less than 70.

SC you really are getting predictable nowadays.

Mercedes A Class used to flip when they saw an elk..

This part of the a38 has lots of small side roads that join quite abruptly - lack of concentration and bingo - big crash. Cars can flip at under 70mph, seen quite a few this winter on way to work - inappropriate use of speed i would suppose (although below the 60mph limit - you can't go round the corners that quick!)

Streetcop, you may well agree that lack of anticipation/awareness/observation is the main cause of rta's, increased speed only excacerbates the consequences?
