Speeding drivers 'off the hook'

Hundreds of drivers caught speeding in Banffshire have been let off after "human error" failed to log their offences on computer.

Of the 457 tickets issued during a three-day period, 124 drivers have already paid their £60 fines and will not be refunded.

The drivers were caught near roadworks on the A96 between Keith and Huntly. The mistake came to light following an internal audit carried out by Grampian Police on Wednesday.

Those drivers who had not admitted their offence or paid a fine have received notification that the offence has been cancelled.

The 60mph road on the A96 had been reduced to 30mph whilst contractor BEAR Scotland carried out repairs. All the offences were committed on the A96 near Coachford on 29 and 30 January and 5 February this year.

Chief Inspector Mark McLaren, of Grampian Police, said the mistake did not reflect on the accuracy of the speed camera.

He said the error was discovered following the North-East Safety Camera Partnership drive to tackle speeding on the A96.

"It was a routine audit carried out to ensure the system is operating correctly," Ch Insp McLaren said.

"Steps have been taken to ensure that there will be no recurrence. The flaw involved human error and in no way reflected on the accuracy of the safety camera.

"All the drivers concerned were exceeding the speed limit and the speeds recorded against them were accurate.

"An incorrect offence code was entered relating to a 30mph limit in a built-up area when it should have been for a temporary set of roadworks.

Training will be given to ensure the mistake is not repeated, he added.

Nice to see they admitted to their mistake, it seems an unpopular thing to do nowadays.
Particularly liked, "Chief Inspector Mark McLaren, of Grampian Police, said the mistake did not reflect on the accuracy of the speed camera". Better make sure the holy grail doesn't get dented

Just wondering what the process is here? They have the details of drivers and could inform them that they wouldn't get fined because they're not on a computer system. I take it they have to enter driver details onto some specific system?

I think the moral of the story is quite clear
