SORN, V5C/2 but no V5
Discussion
I suspect I know the answer, but I'm going to ask anyway.
I bought a basket case of a car approximately 2 years ago and the chap I bought it from gave me the new keeper details - V5C/2. Since then I've been somewhat busy and distracted, and haven't realised until recently that I've not received the V5. The car has quite definitely been off the road - it's stripped and currently being taken back to bare metal.
When I worked out I haven't received the V5 (which was earlier this week), I printed out the form V62 and figured out I'd apply for one. However, on reading that, it says that any SORN declaration from the previous keeper is invalid as soon as the car changes keeper.
I figure my best course of action is to apply for a new V5, fill in the V62, provide the V5C/2 and tell the DVLA when I acquired the car. I have no idea what they will do about the "missing" SORN notification for the past 2 years. My excuse would be that I have had no paperwork, so didn't know I needed to do anything - weak I know. An alternative approach would be to apply for a V5 and say I've only owned the car for ~4 weeks. I'm not keen on this approach as I suspect I would get found out and it would bite me in the a$$.
Any experiences appreciated.

You could always start by checking the current status at https://www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-information-from-dv... and see if DVLA think it's still SORN or not.
The PH wisdom, received from DVLA, used to be that if it was taken off the road before the SORN requirement came in, it didn't need to be declared.

Unfortunately, I can't find the quoted text about the cut off date on the current .gov.uk website anywhere.
Currently, your vehicle is sitting outside the SORN system in the third state (untaxed) which is only available to vehicles which were taken off road before the SORN rules came in. When you became keeper there was neither tax nor SORN to cancel.
