A friend of mine moved house and around a similar time gave back a leased car.

Unfortunately they forgot to pay £2.50 at the Dartford Crossing.

Cut a long story short, the people at the old property have got in touch saying a man has been round demanding £450 on behalf of the highways.

Before they call and pay £450 - has anyone had experience in them being reasonable with issues like this?

EG - would the defense of never receiving letters be enough to warrant reducing it?

TIA

Sounds like its been passed to a bayliff. Most of the £450 will likely be their costs. Not known for being reasonable.

The system changed in November 2014, and it's only in the last couple of months have they managed to get round to issuing Charge certs and Order for Recovery notices, but this is the first bailiff recovery I've heard of for Dart.

He needs to complete a TE7 (Out of time appeal) - http://hmctsformfinder.justice.gov.uk/HMCTS/GetFor...
Moving house and lease vehicles are usually good examples of why drivers do not receive the correct notifications, and are usually granted in my experience. More details here - https://www.gov.uk/appeal-against-a-penalty-charge...

This should reverse the process a few steps to allow him to appeal, or at least reduce it to a more reasonable penalty.

If he didn't receive the court documents, and his address details had been updated at the DVLA, I'd be looking at the possibility of a stat dec..

I used to get fines every week, that ended up cancelled, because their system was ste, it would register a crossing but not charge my account. The one time I did make a mistake, as I had no funds on my tag I contacted them & just paid the crossing fee (this used to be on the back of the letter).

Mine was a lease car so by the time the fine letters arrived it was always several weeks after the event it was never an issue. They do go in hard for none payment but but don't let them bully you. The first few I got they threatened court for non payment, I just used to laugh and invited them to do it, pointing out they had registered a crossing on my tag but not taken the funds.

How can you forget to pay it? Is there no barrier?

No barrier ..... it's a system much the same as the congestion charge where you can pre-pay or pay after but 24 hours (or whatever)

Signs advise how to pay: by account, on line or at your local Payzone store, mine's a hundred yards from where I live in Derbsyhire so not exactly an onerous task, provided you remember...

What is the point in having signs in Derbyshire advising on how to pay the Dartford crossing fee? confused - It's @ 170 miles away!

Someone has really not thought that through!

I think he's saying his nearest payzone store is in Derbyshire...

The signage for the crossing is really clear!

Did they have mail forwarding in place?

If not, why not?

I am indeed. The signs on the approaches to the Dartford Crossing are hard, if not impossible, to miss.

We crossed it last year on the way to Dover - the Mrs tried to pay online but the website was down & I'm not 100% sure but we either couldn't get through on the phone, or couldn't find a number. We ended up finding a McD's in France the following day & trying again with my sons tablet and managed to log on & pay. I get why they don't have toll booths, but it would make it a lot bloody easier for "tourists" if they had a couple. The tolls in France have both the tag & the manned things so it can be done.

Just set up an account now, takes a few minutes and saves this issue in future.

Wouldn't be an issue if it was free when paid for like the politicians promised. Spot the error in the previous sentence

In my case nowhere near the Dartford Crossing, I only use it once every few years, it's easy to forget when you're off on your hols...
