Trawling through the TVSRP site - and looking at reasons for installing speed cameras. One camera was installed soley because of 'high PIC per km'.

Any ideas what PIC is?

Just to illustrate this one camera's history (installed in 1994):

1990 1 serious, 6 slight injuries
1991 3 slight
1992 1 serious, 2 slight
1993 3 slight
1994 3 slight
1995 1 serious, 7 slight
1996 1 serious, 6 slight
1997 3 slight
1998 6 slight
1999 1 killed, 4 slight
2000 1 serious, 4 slight
2001 2 slight
2002 1 serious, 3 slight
2003 3 slight
2004 n/a

Hardly a glowing recomendation for cameras?!?!? In fact, of all the cameras I regularly pass in Reading, only one site has had a positive impact out of around 10 I looked at...

Have a look for yourself at www.saferroads.org

Personal Injury collision i.e. not seriously injured

although that has a strange definition:

An injury for which a person is detained in hospital as an in-patient, or any of the following injuries whether or not they are detained in hospital: fractures, concussion, internal injuries, crushings, burns (excluding friction burns), severe cuts and lacerations, severe general shock requiring medical treatment and injuries causing death 30 or more days after the accident.

Thanks Cuneus - next question...

The difference between KSI and PIC is...?

PIC is when the injury does not fall into the definition of SI

Individual camera stats are VERY interesting and finally (in the overwhelming majority) blow the speed camera myth wide apart. They are normally a completely random set of figures with no discnerbile trend

Any BIB want to comment ?

If those numbers are correct: a quick Excel spreadsheet reveals:
Average PIC rate before camera installed (1990-1993) = 4.0
Average PIC rate after camera installed (1994-2003) = 4.5

Also interesting to note the K (kill, not included in figures above) AFTER the camera was intalled!

Very effective

the cameras in Reading are a joke, I can only think of one that is situated in a reasonable position. They seem to be using scam vans more and more these days though, there is nearly always one at the top end of the wokingham road, and one loiters outside the college regularly (blocking the bus stop). That scam van outside the college must coin in a fortune when its not rush hour.

AFAIK, the only ones that dont work and havnt for as long as i had my snooper, is the camera outside the nortumberland arms near safeway, (which ironically being outside a school would be the most effective on e i guess),and that camera in lower earley as you head towards the "blackboy roundabout" (not very peecee i know but thats its name!) towards the M4 roundbout. AFAIK, a month ago, all the others in Reading worked!

Princeperch - where is blackboy roundabout?

You'll know the stretch of road that these stats are from - it's Wilderness Road just south of the Uni - I think there are actually 2 cameras in this stretch (both Westbound...)

yep i know wilderness road, near the Three Tuns pub? The Black Boy roundabout is the new roundabout that they are still finishing off, quite a big affair, exits for bracknell, aldershot ect. if you go past the Unis Earley Gate entrance on Whiteknights Road, (not far from the top bp garage off the wokingham road) at the mini roundabout right, straight on, camera which i believe has never worked is half way down that road on your left, black boy roundabout is couple of minutes straight on from here. if you come from wokingham road way to go towards the m4 i guess you must have used it at some point. Have no idea why it has the name it does!

Here's a really good one! This camera is in Silverdale Road, Earley, Reading.

The camera was installed for 2 reasons:
1)Evidence that local residents are concerned about speed for example complaints, surveys, petitions
2) Proximity to vulnerable road users including children, horse riders, elderly

Now this camera is in a very suburban environment, and there are nearby schools and a park - so the camera may well be warranted...

1990 0 incidents
1991 0 incidents
1992 0 incidents
1993 0 incidents
1994 0 incidents
1995 2 slight injuries
1996 4 slight injuries
1997 1 slight
1998 1 slight
1999 0 incidents
2000 0 incidents
2001 0 incidents
2002 1 slight
2003 1 slight

Anyone want to guess what year the camera was installed?
