Car pulls into lane and brakes in front of 44 tonnes.

I drive a lorry 1/3 the weight of that and would probably have had trouble stopping in time to avoid hitting

the red car.

Just what was the car driver thinking of ?

The truck driver had three whole seconds to react to the Civic driver pulling straight into his path then sticking the brakes on for no reason at all. Yet he didn't even begin to slow.

14 sec into the video, the Civic pulls into L2 and slaps the brakes on. Truck doing 54mph from dashcam subtitles.
17 sec into the video, impact. Truck doing 54mph from dashcam subtitles.

The couple of taps on the shoulder, the Civic was clearly expecting the truck to stop far quicker than he was intending on - perhaps the wagon wasn't quite lined straight? Perhaps he was expecting the Civic to get off the slip onto the shoulder, barely a couple of car lengths further on from where they finished up stationary?

50/50. Civic driver was being a cock, truck driver didn't make any effort to avoid.

He was a weapons grade bell end ! But they managed to collide 3 separate times , I think the hgv drive was being a bit silly too

Why the feck did the car brake in the first place?

The pulling over "impact" was clearly the lorry "pushing it" a little, though he also won't slow down as fast as a car, I rather suspect he could have stopped a little faster, certainly the final impact appeared to be a f**k you...

3. Two nobheads find each other.

By the way -
Why did the Civic Driver stop in an active lane?

Informed comment is only likely to be heard from those with experience of driving 30+ tonne vehicles. Others should realise that their opinion is of little worth, as they have no idea what they are talking about.

Brake testing a lorry does seem a remarkably stupid activity, and it appears the red car came down the slip road so why pull in front of the lorry and brake as he did. When they pull on to the hard shoulder the Civic driver then stops in the live lane rather than continuing on to the hard shoulder ahead. Bet the lrory driver thought he would go on to the hard shoulder.

Something more here than first appears?. The lorry driver says he was in the middle lane to let a car join yet the only vehicle in the slip road was the red car that brake tested him. It looked like there was plenty of room for the car to pass in the third lane so it seems odd to go up the inside like that. I wonder if the truck had just pulled across in front of the red car and he had needed to brake hard?

Brake testing a heavy was pretty stupid of the car driver though and the camera footage will put him in the wrong whatever happened before.

I agree but I think there is a element of 'hgv drivers sticking together' and not wanting to out a fellow driver of a bit off ropey driving. Or maybe he did all he could , but it doesn't look like he wanted to avoid any of the bumps

So you're telling us that it takes more than three seconds for an HGV to begin to shed even one single mile per hour?

Sorry, no.

If a driver swerves in front of you and brakes unexpectedly - at the very least you should slow down to open some distance after you collide with them. Preferably before.

Big vehicle takes longer to slow, but there was loads of time between the first and second collisions.

Way to start a conversation biggrin

Informed comment is only likely to be heard from those with access to data logs of the lorry.
2D low res video from high up is not a sound way to judge closing speeds, braking effort etc.

I think the Civic owner was knocking one out and climaxed - stamping his foot on the brake pedal in the process.
But he is a registered sex addict and this collision is a result of a medical condition and he should receive counselling and be encouraged to reintegrate.*

I bet this isn't the biggest presumption made if this thread gathers momentum

All red car driver needs to say is he thought he saw something out the corner of his eye and braked. Lorry driver has no excuse, at the end of the day he failed to maintain a safe stopping distance to the car in front. He had time to fall back after car moved into the lane in front of him. And why was he in that lane to start with? He could actually have just moved over anyway and wouldn't have to lose speed or momentum then. And finally, it looked to me as if he was aggressively close to the red car when they moved over to stop, again he could have opened up a bigger gap as they moved across the lanes.

What ever the reason for the red car braking suddenly, the lorry driver failed to maintain a safe distance and has no excuse.

Watch the whole video... not a snippet in a newspaper.

And watch carefully from the beginning...

The red car you can see looks different - a Mazda?

The Honda isn't the same car - either comes from behind the Mazda from the slip road or is undertaking the lorry

Red car at the beginning is a Mazda 2. Honda must have undertaken from some way back before pulling its little braking stunt. Crash for cash maybe?

Which just makes me wonder even more why the truck driver started to change from L2 back to L1 after the van had passed him. (6sec in newspaper vid, 24sec in this one)

The Civic's rear bumper appears to be damaged before the first impact - I thought they might be reflections, but they don't move.

Civic bumper was damaged before impact.
Truck was about to return to the left lane( you can see the shimmy as the truck driver sees the red Honda appear in his left mirror) but changed his mind.
The red Honda driver moved into the path of the truck and braked. (he is insane or was trying an insurance fraud)
Whatever the car driver is at fault as you can't stop a truck safely in that distance when a bell-end does that in front of you.

Even though the full video shows the Civic was clearly visible much earlier.

Or was trying to "teach a lesson" for a perceived blocking, due to that partial change back to L1? No argument that the Civic driver was being a cock, for whatever reason.

Certainly you can't, if you don't even attempt to lose one mph during the three seconds of brake lights and closing gap.
