The reason i ask is because of course people will say 'well 70 is the limit so anything over is breaking the law' but it seems to me as the majority of cars seems to drive over 70
Lane three, (or two), is chock a block with serial/default speeders. It is a lane to be avoided. Lane two or one for me.

The last time I got pulled doing over a ton on the M1 @ Junction 15 in the early hours of Christmas day, I had a chat with the Officer (as you do!), and he told Me that anything under 85mph and they're not interested unless you're driving like a complete bell-end. I was polite, contrite, respectful to the Officer and honest about My speed, so after a bit of a chat he decided to give Me an early Christmas present and let Me off with a warning to slow down a bit rather than (He actually said: "If you've got cruise control, stick it on 84mph when the motorway is quiet and you'll have no problems. Let someone draw our attention rather than yourself - It'll only add a couple minutes onto your journey time!")
I have yet to receive anything for sitting at 78/79 whilst on cruise. Waze GPS says this is 76MPH.
Just the other day I went past a police car at 79 whilst on the motorway. He was in Lane 2 and I was in Lane 3. Everything in front was pulling in so I just stuck to Lane 3 and went by without issue.

A couple of decades ago Sussex Chief Police Person told our driving group that Sussex Police were not too bothered about 80 mph on motorways when it was safe.
Aggressive driving though, triggered cop reflexes and was stomped on.
Stuff changes all the time, so generally around 75-80 on the speedo seems not to attract blue lights.
Motorways around here are always busy or being 'improved' so the chances of doing much more than 80 mph are rare.
In any case, no matter what speed you reach in lane 3, there's always a BMW or a Golf R tailgating you who needs to go faster.

An officer suggested that to me too, 80-85 mph on a motorway then I should be fine, it's best to keep it around an indicated 80 mph though.
During a Bike Safe ride the accompanying officer said to follow a strict 30/40/50 in those zones, on unrestricted roads then ride to the conditions, we were well north of 60 mph but he was happy.

I got pulled over by a t
t of a police inspector on the M9 near Stirling years ago. He was doing around 67mph (probably 70 on his speedo) in the inside lane of the 2 lane motorway with a long line of cars timidly following behind. I passed the line including him very carefully at an indicated 75mph only to see his face turn red and gesticulated wildly for me to pull over. He was in a panda type car on his own so no calibrated speed recording equipment and no corroboration. He was obviously annoyed that someone would have the cheek to pass someone as 'important' as him.
He had a rant for a while which I listened to almost politely then I asked whether I was free to go now. He reluctantly agreed and I left (before him) and got up to speed rather quickly before he got back in his car. Other than that one instant, I've never been stopped on a motorway and usually travel at around 85 where road conditions allow.

My general rule is that as long as I am under 80 (GPS 80) and not driving like a knob, then I don't need to worry about looking for plod, or the cameras. I regularly do 80 through the M25 speed cameras around the M4, done it for years, never got a ticket.
Above 80, I pay a lot more attention to looking out for plod.
