Excel sheet

Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership offer up all the KSI stats for their camera sites on the web. It's a bit of a trawl, but I gathered data for 16 camera sites around Reading. There's a mix of mobile, main road gatso, and suburban through route gatso in here. Some of the sites have multiple cameras. Interestingly they don't have info for red light cameras available...

I've taken the data from the tables, which indicates number killed, seriously injured and slightly injured per annum. Next I allocated a 'score' of 5 for killed, 3 for serious injury and 1 for slight injury - and added these up for each year. Next step was to take an average score per year for before camera and after camera.

I then totalled these averages up.... The score for Reading before cameras was 136.0, after cameras it was 135.8. I'd call that a statistical draw.

So - cameras don't make a bit of difference across Reading.

In the charts, a line is drawn on each chart to show approximately when the camera was installed. The exact date is also shown to the left.

This is home grown statistics - I'm no expert and accept that profesionals would do it differently. If anyone can improve on my effort, feel free. Paul Smith, help yourself to this information!

Thanks to Parrot of doom for hosting my file

Whilst I commend you for taking the time to and effort to perform this kind of analysis, what would be more interesting would be to see a breakdown of the kind of vehicles involved and circumstances of these accidents, however I doubt the information is made available.

Something showing:
Motorcycles
Cars
Public Transport
Drunk Drivers
Drugged Drivers
No Tax
No Insurance
No MOT
Hit and Run
Accidents at red lights....

Obviously tere is a lage amount of overlap but it would be intersting to get a figure on the number of KSIs where all parties are Clean and Sober as well as Taxed, Insured and MOT'd.....

I guess I could collect this information under the freedom of information act?

Anyone know if this would work?

Interesting work! Thanks for taking the time.

Taking a quick look at the totals, it looks to me (without doing any statistical analysis) that there's a downward trend between 90 and 96 that is abruptly ended by a lurch upwards, and then a slightly less obvious downward trend between 97 and 03.

Any idea what happened in 96-97 in Reading? That Anything that would increase traffic levels past the cameras? The upward lurch seems to be primarily in Wokingham Rd, Kings Rd, Berkeley Ave A4, Buckingham Dr and perhaps Woodcote Rd. Perhaps some roadworks forcing more traffic onto these roads?

Looking at KSIs, there is no obvious trend going on there. It's more of a sine wave. It is likely to go up again over the next few years.

There doesn't appear to be any trend for Ks on their own.

What we don't have, of course, is the special causes of any of these accidents. Were they concentrated in certain times of year, certain times of day, certain types of weather, on particular days (Saturdays, Monday mornings, etc). Nor do we have any indication of traffic levels or mix through the period. It would be much more illuminating to do some real root cause analysis to determine whether the accidents were not simply randomly scattered throughout the day/week/year but had particular causes. But that's no doubt covered by the FOI act.

There is a link on the Thames Valley police website that has all the stats on every camera in the area..I checked the few cameras that I go past and found that since they were installed none of them had reduced accidents and one site had increased since the camera was installed.None of these sights had a bad record in the first place so it makes you wonder why they are there...

Yes, I wonder.
