Had a bit of an odd one happen to me tonight.

I ordered a pizza via the Domino's app, payment was accepted and order placed.

Pizza arrives, I sign the credit card slip (I used a debit card), took my Pizza and shut the front door.

About 10 minutes later I get a call from a local number, I answered and they claimed to be from Domino's. They stated my card did not process and I needed to come into the store to pay cash and could I come into the store tonight. I refused and said I had signed a valid credit card slip, not my problem. He said 'OK I've spoken to my manager and he said it is complementary this time'. Call ends.

I look at my bank account, and the transaction did go through, for the correct amount. I called the number back to confirm to them it had gone through.... it rang out and no answer... I tried again, now I was blocked (It didn't ring, and I was told I was blocked by an automated message).

I called the store I ordered from (different number than the one that called me) and asked to speak to the manager.. lovely chap... had no idea of what just happened. He confirmed the order was fine on his side and there was no issues at all.

We both try the number again, we are both blocked and appears the number now does not exist.

As a precaution, I have cancelled my debit card.

I have spent ages on Google trying to find a similar situation and no one has reported anything. Also googled the number that called me with no real results (I.E not flagged as anyone previously having issues, also is not the number of any other Domino's store.

I live and work in California, this all happened here (I know this is a UK based website, I am an Expat)

Anyone got any ideas? How the heck did someone get my phone number when I used the dominoes app and all was transacted electronically?

I have contacted Dominoes head office with an urgent complaint as well.

I'm stumped!

Assuming it was malicious, as it sounds... then I can think of 3 possibilities:

  1. Insider in Dominos doing naughty things
  2. Someone has access to Dominos computer systems
  3. Someone is following Dominos delivery guys around and then getting peoples phone numbers.... it could even be a dodgy Dominos delivery guy doing this to customers
It doesn't necessarily mean they have your card details, even if someone has access to Dominos systems the card data should be in a far more secure part of their systems and very difficult to retrieve for normal employees - unless they are useless.

They asked for you to go in and pay cash though, that's the odd part, they weren't phishing for card details. Best result for them would be an irate customer coming into the store alerting the whole place and quickly found out? Very odd...

staff member pockets the cash if you go in and pay? only you and dominos know you bought a pizza , and if it was someone from africa accessing the online ordering then they still wouldnt get the card details or the cash

The States are a bit behind the times with card payments. They've only just started rolling out chip and PIN

Perhaps it was supposed to go like this:

The person on the phone asked the OP to come to the store to pay knowing he has just received a pizza and probably wants to sit down and eat it. The OP simply refused but how many would say "why can't I pay over the phone?". At that point the person says "sure, give me the long number on the front, the name of the cardholder, the expiry date and the last 3 digits on the back".

Not sure how the phones work over there, but my guess is the hope is that you put the phone down and pick it up again to call the card company.

If they keep the line open my not putting phone down or some other means, they then get your security details by posing as card co.

I ordered off the app on Sunday night.

I did not, and have never had to sign anything at the door.

I don't think these apps are far secure, I have used Starbucks mobile app to reload my card(from a credit card) , get to my office and receive a genuine call from my bank that asked if I spent 2500 c$ in the Apple online store???? I have no idea who managed to get my credit card details, but it was just after using an app!

Thanks for the replies folks.

I think I am leaning towards one of two options from my thoughts and yours.

1) Dominos staff pocketing the cash - This is the least sinister option... but also seems the least likely. It can't be a racket that is sustainable, it wouldn't take much for someone to check their bank, then go back to the store and demand their money back. Couldn't happen more than once or twice before its busted.

2) Luring me out of the house. This one is more concerning.. and unfortunately I think currently the most likely scenario. The delivery driver has my details (Phone number, address) and can get the measure of the place when he is here (Number of cars, number of Pizzas ordered, was it for 1 or a party of 10 etc...). In my case it was an order for 1 as the wife was out.

I've had a reply from Dominoes corporate that it is a franchise issue and its being passed on... so won't see that again.

I have decided to report it to the police as a non urgent possible crime. Even so its on record if someone else does the same.

Also, its perfectly normal to sign a credit card slip at the door step in the US, no chip and pin here! smile

I always pay paypal when I order from Dominos.

Not only does it save a lot of hassle about payment.

It only saves any awkward slow change counting at the door when they're expecting a tip rofl

Police came around just now, they said there was nothing immediately they could do (Not that I was expecting them to chase down the delivery driver or something), but were greatly appreciative of the heads up. No other reports to their knowledge so far... so lets hope it all blows over.
