Does anyone know if you have to pay to drive out of the Congestion Zone in London? My car has been parked inside over the weekend and I will be exiting it today. My understanding is the cameras point towards those cars coming into the zone and not out.

Is this correct???

Thank you.

Unless you where out of the zone by 7am you owe the charge, it's only £11.50. Why take the risk?

Nothing to stop you driving out without paying.

You might get a fine though depending on time.

Some years ago I got called out to attend a site inside the congestion zone during the night. I did the job and left the zone at 7:02 and still got a ticket for £40.

The charge is for being 'in' the zone, which you will be.
How would they know where exactly you are going, the zone is littered with cameras, they don't just pick you up leaving or entering.
Hence why exemptions are available to certain people that live inside the zone.

Correct. You will be seen being in the zone so will be charged.

To be pedantic, the charge is for moving in the zone- you can be parked all day and not trigger the charge.

Is it for moving in the zone, or driving in and/or out? I am never quite sure.

Its for moving within the zone, although by default there are a lot of cameras at the entry/exit points so its entirely possible (but unlikely) to drive within the zone and not get picked up.

So could you drive in before 07.00 on a weekday, park your car for the day and drive out again after 18.00 and avoid paying the charge?

Although there is some dispute as to parking on a meter still needing to pay the charge. If you are in a residents or private parking area, you definitely don't need to pay but I've seen rumours on the net that parking on pay & display street parking does trigger the charge. I don't know how true that is...

I am registered with London parking so I wouldn't be surprised if the two are linked.

Not sure how accurate it is though.
