I was given an old Land Rover about 18 months back by a guy who's now passed away. I registered it in my name and then received the replacement V5 (old type).

It was only used for off road purposes (farm hack) for the last 5-10 years and is still off the road.
About 6 months after I took possesion it reached 25 years old and was tax exempt.

I've never SORNed it and never had a tax disc reminder or even a fine.

The V5 will need to be replaced by the new type by July (?) Will it arrive automatically or do I have to do something to get it?

Thanks.

I believe that the rolling 25 year old tax exemption was removed by Bliar. Ie if your Land-Rover was built after around 1976 (not sure of exact year) then it will always be subject to tax if used on the road.

I'm not sure of the V5 situation but "Practical Classics" magazine has been discussing exactly your situation.

If the Landie hasn't had an Excise Licence since 31.1.1998 you are exempt the SORN procedure.

If there has been a Licence issued since that date then yearly SORN applies.

The onus on the new Registration Certificate procedure IIRC is down to DVLA and it is they who should send to you and will do so if there is any activity on your file.

Presume you are considering put the tub back on the road so at the time when you have MOT and Insurance sorted then, if no new V5 forthcoming write to DVLA and advise as you (free) relicense.

IIRC 1973 or 74. I can't find anything on the DVLA website to confirm that though.

It may be that you've slipped through the net, I'd SORN it pronto though just to be sure you don't get a nasty demand letter in the future.

>>>Lancs BiB site come up trumps though - it's 1972: www.lancashire.police.uk/v2.html

The rolling exemption from VED was halted by the Labour Government in 1997 - as soon as they got in.

Any vehicle first registered after 31 December 1972 is subject to VED. This particular decision has so far cost me about £1,200 - cheers Gordon.

Thanks for everyones advice.

I'm not going to put it back on the road but I wanted to make sure it would be possible.

It hasn't had a tax disc for at least 10 years and it was first registered in about 1979 which probably explains why I haven't had any reminders to tax or sorn it.

So basically I don't have to do anything unless I want to put it back on the road. I'm happy.

Thanks again all.
