Just had a mate message me rather worried - he's not a petrol head by a looooong way, not massively experienced driver and went through a no-entry sign by mistake - unfortunately with a police van waiting at the junction. To be fair it's not the clearest junction from his direction of travel but still not the brightest thing to do.

He's a polite lad, apologised profusely, the officer wasn't unreasonable but said there was no excuse, went back to his van for a minute with his licence to run checks then came back and told him verbally that it would be 3 points and £100 fine and that it would come in the post in a week or two. And then left. No ticket issued.

Is that normal nowadays? Is he going to get something through the post or is it the police officers way of making him sweat and consider what a prat he was?

I believe a NIP (notice of intended prosecution) can be issued verbally and without paperwork

It can, it's if it's not given at the time that it has to be served within 14 days.

Because that's not how it operates in a lot of places now. The officer doesn't get to decide, they report the matter & somebody else decides on what the appropriate disposal option is.

I thought that failing to conform to a traffic sign was a non endorsable offence ?

Depends on the traffic sign, No Entry is endorsable.

Thanks for the replies folks.

So does this mean he is most likely to just get a FPN through the post? It's not likely to become a court matter just because a ticket wasn't issued there and then or anything is it? He's holding his hands up and saying he made a mistake, not complaining, he's just worried about it being a court appearance instead of ticket I think!

If that's what the officer told him, then that's the most likely scenario - it's perfectly feasible for the matter to be dealt with in that manner.

Of course, he may hear nothing more, or he may receive a summons / requisition at some point down the line.

If the sign meets the requirements etc. on size?
If not it is non prescribed sign and without the relevant SoS authorisation is an unlawful sign ?

I'm pretty certain vonhosen was referring to what the sign relates to in regards to the Law rather than its size, location, and whether the person who put the sign up had had the correct sign installation training, including a full Health & Safety course on the use of tools and ladders.
