speedometer reading
Discussion
Not sure where to post this so mods please move as appropriate.
Been offered a 2007 Kia that's ex MoD at a very good price. I mean a VERY good price. However it's done 240,000 kms and the speedo reads in Km's. It's never been UK registered having a MoD registration and used overseas. It is R/H drive.
How would I go about registering it, guess I could google that, but is a speedo reading in Km's legal? Would there be issues at MoT time? I'd be concerned about putting a new mph speedo in since everyone will assume it's been clocked.
Anyone got any ideas please.

There wouldn't be an issue with the MOT, you can input KM's instead of miles for the distance reading. It measuring in KM's isn't part of the MOT test.
Aren't there some weird tax implications with ex MOD vehicles, when I was looking at defenders there were lots that were export only but can't recall the reason ?

Do it now, and you'll need to put a dual-marked speedo in, because the CoC will flag it up as an issue (assuming it's from the EU - MOD and RHD would be from Cyprus, I'd guess). How would I go about registering it, guess I could google that, but is a speedo reading in Km's legal? Do it next year, when it hits 10yo, and you'll only need an MOT - and Mr MOT doesn't care.
Rather more to the point, though, I'd sincerely hope a decade-old 150k mile Kia is damn near free.

Near-new ones? They're all being sold by an ex-Mil specialist, but they're not ex-Mil. The export-only is because they won't meet emission standards, since they were built for developing world markets. There's a world of difference between what you are required by law to alter on an imported vehicle vs what you can get away with not doing on import...
In theory you should:
Change the headlights to suit left hand traffic (although it's RHD it might've been fitted with headlights for where it was used, which may be right hand traffic)
Change the speedometer to read either mph or mph AND kmh. You can do this with a dial face conversion but tbh if the vehicle is common in the UK just get an alternative UK dash cluster and fit that. If you're really bothered get a 'mileage adjustment' outfit to adjust from the recorded km to miles at the same time (note this is NOT a requirement but I'll mention here)
Most of the details are covered here:

As suggested above, once it hits 10 yrs old you just need to MOT it, which an on the ball tester would fail for the wrong headlights if they kick up to the wrong side. The speedometer he won't care about as long as it's not damaged.
Worth noting that even if you can get it on the road with an MOT without making necessary changes, if the vehicle is non-compliant with Construction & Use Regs you could get done for it if the vehicle is pulled over and inspected thoroughly.
