I just came out of the car wash about 1/2 mile from home and realised as soon as i saw Mr Bike cop that i was wearing a bright white shirt and no seatbelt, so did he

He was very nice about it, but he could not tell if my insurance was current because I pay monthly, so he gave me a producer.

I went and presented my docs straight away, but now i am wondering..if he could not tell if i had paid for my insurance, how will they be able to tell by me showing them my certificate at the Police station?

I might have taken out a policy and then not paid for it.

Just curious...

Well, you won't get an insurance certificate if you don't pay for it.

There isn't - its more about control.

Had a producer in a company car - duly presented insurance certificate which confirms company vehicle was insured. Trouble was no evidence that either a) I worked for the company or b) the vehicle belonged to the company

Actaually you get an insurance certificate as soon as you pay the first installment/deposit. So you may get your hands on the cert for a tenth of what the insurance actually costs.

It's also an unfortunate fact that the insurance certificate is by far the easiest document to forge. Anyone with a half decent laser/inject printer could knock something up that looks passable. The tax disk and MOT certificate have been made very difficult to copy/forge, yet I reckon insurance is more important than either of those (though obviously the govt. don't make money from selling insurance).

EDIT: Out of interest hedders, are you not a beliver in seat belt useage? I never forget to put mine on as I don't have to "remember" as such, it's just an instinctive thing to do as soon as I get in the car. I feel quite uncomfortable without one actually.

I do belt up most of the time, but only for legal reasons really.

I have had four accidents in my lifetime, and seatbelts would have done me no favours in any of them, especially when I got broadsided in the drivers door...I managed to get myself out of the way purely because I didn't have a seat belt on and I saw her coming.
Both cars were written off.

When I was 17 my mk2 escort estate had a head on incident with a 3.0 Carlton, the combined speed was about 60mph and there were three people in the carlton and three people in my car and not one of us was belted up. The only injuries were where my fists slipped off the steering wheel and I punched the switches on the dash and got some bloody knuckles.
Both cars were written off.

I piled my RX7 into a parked car no injuries.

The most recent one was also my most embarassing Incident, in My Daimler I rear ended a Honda Civic and shoved it into a brand new merc....No injuries.

Maybe I am just lucky, I would always wear a belt on the motorway, but I don't see the benefit around town.

And as soon as you don't pay up, the insurance company demands their certificate back.

They can demand all they like but if the scrote's "lost it" then what can they do.

I have nowhere to go in my car anyway in a crash. I have no rear seats to dive into and the fuel tank divides my seat with my passenger. Might as well wear the seat belt.

Another heinous crime detected by the BiB, next time try burglary or baby stealing, if they catch you, which is unlikely if it's burglary, you'll only get a caution for a first offence. Sadly this option is never used for motoring crimes. Still your £60 will help pay for the Christmas party.

This was not supposed to be a BIB bashing thread, there are plenty of those already.

BTW the penalty for no seatbelt is still £30.

Yes i would rather not have had to pay it but I DO know the rules
