Now I haven't got a baby - thankfully....BUT, I have to drive past a nursery on my way to work and often have to negotiate round mothers removing their offspring from the rear of their vehicle.

They tend to do this from the offside rear of the car - which means that they are standing in the road and very often holding up the traffic as there is not enough room to get past with their door being open.

Now surely it is better for them to fit the baby seat to the nearside rear seat so that they are unloading the child from the pavement and not into traffic. I can remember as a kid always having to get out of the car onto the pavement side, even if it meant shuffling across the rear seat.

Are their any Police/Safety guidelines on this?

I used to put the baby seat behind the driver, but that was because they are a right swine to do up, so I would get into the other seat to strap them in.

When you have more than one baby, putting the youngest behind the driver also makes sense because they don't need as much legroom so you get more to yourself, and also don't have to keep shouting at them to stop kicking the back of your seat! (when they grow to a size where their feet can reach the seat, you swap the seats around because the oldest one has his his feet on the floor and still can't kick your seat - God I hate that!)

Not a legal but practical response!

We have three belts in the back and put it in the middle for the sam reason, also it is easy to get her in either side then.

Also, she can see where we are going between the front seats and so is a lot happier.

Would you please stop talking sense! You are jumping to wild conclusions that there are other factors to road saftey besides speed, which is going to get you burnt at the stake...

There are no safety guidelines. Common sense dictates that you fit it to the near side if you have only one. I have two sprogs and therefore two seats.

Some safety guidelines suggest placing baby in middle of rear seat as this protects from side impacts...

Only if you have three three-point seatbelts. Fitting a child seat with only lap belt is possible in most cases, but definitely less safe.

Gut! That ist why I mentioned .. it seems daft for "Haynes" to suggest this without further explanations..

We use a well known brand und fit according to instructions for our youngest kittens...
