Won't work. There is already a case in France of a car going absolutely nuts somewhere near Clermont Ferrand and deciding how its going to drive itself. Having it networked will lead to chaos. It won't work reliably if at all and people will hack it.

Only the Labour Party would appoint a "director of traffic operations" who axiomatically hates 90 per cent of all road users.

Keep it coming Blair, another nail in your coffin.

Oh

Well meaning PHers will immediately bypass it
Everyone else will rip the system out it becomes compromised by some snot nosed script kiddie.

The idea stinks of vested interests to me (when considering what his new position is).

He is considering placing more traffic lights on slip roads to encourage drivers to shun motorways.

Some idiot said:
If people can’t get on to the motorway so easily, they will probably choose to use totally acceptable trunk roads

So (again) they're trying to bully us into using the worst option "Solving" a congestion problem by creating more congestion It'd be funny if it wasn't so fking stupid

To get to my nearest Tesco (as the crow flies its about 1.5 miles), I have to either swim across the Manchester Ship Canal, or take the M60 one junction anticlockwise from 10 to 11.

So guess which I do?

If they're so concerned about motorways being a priority route for freight, then why not introduce tax incentives for freight to travel at night, when the bloody things are empty?

Have you not travelled by night? The motorways are full of trucks at night as well, generally misbehaving in lane 3 (I don't blame them really). Perhaps the tax incentives should be in favour of rail.... oh silly me there's no spare capacity on the rail network either. Canals, anyone?

"Building more roads is not a solution" - WTF??? Seems like a pretty good solution to me! And yes, ultimately those roads MAY WELL get more congested...but things will be even worse at that point in time if we DON'T build more roads.

M-ways were conceived as rapid-transit for all, but now us plebs aren't going to be allowed to use them!

FFS - this shower in government need a damn good assassinating. (I was going to be more polite, but I've decided they've gone too far already. This country needs a Blairectomy, a Prescottectomy, a Blunkettectomy, ...Brunstrom...etc...etc...etc!!!

Quote "Mr Turner, who worked for Transport for London as managing director of street management,"

So he'll be the guy who has blocked off streets in London left right and centre to 'improve' traffic flow?

Doesn't look very promising, does it?

Aside from improving traffic flow building more dual carriageways and motorways would also improve road safety as traffic is diverted from going though villages and from single carriageways.

All the time, come 0000 the motorways are empty - and thats just about anywhere in the country. They don't wake up again until about 0500.

As for rail, its simply cheaper to load everything onto a truck and drive it there. Rail will never be a viable option for freight, unless you're talking about dedicated railway lines from a large plant to the nearest distribution centre.

Brilliant. Pay an absolute fortune for road tax and the petrol I need to put in the the car to drive it, only to be advised by some sodomite Civil Servant (who I also have to pay for) that I cant use the roads I and many millions of others, have actually paid for.

WTF !!

Whilst not a great fan of the French, I do wish on occasion we British had a bit more backbone & actually engaged in a bit of Civil disobedience now and again just to remind the powers that be that they are actually employed by US to serve US (and not vice versa).

As for the phrase "rat run", havent taxed motorists already paid for the privilege of being allowed to drive there ?
