I am hoping to purchase a car from back home in the UK this month and had a question regarding registration.

I want to have the car shipped abroad to the US for a few months for a road trip. Any idea how long it takes for the logbook to be updated to reflect the new registered owner (me)? Is there something else I could use to show I am the owner so the car can be sent on its way? I am trying to make sure that all DVLA paperwork is in place to minimise the time between purchase and shipping. Any suggestions very welcome!

ensure the V5 is in your name first, and that you have a bill of sale, I had these to import a car into Canada, these were accepted by the relevant authorities here, you would hope its a similar situation in the states, though not sure how you persuade them its a temporary import.

Have you checked if you can import said car to the US along with the costs?

+1

Some cars cannot be used on the public highways in the USA, even on a temporary import status.

I think there are a few rules which might be an issue depending upon the car
1) Usually the car has to be a certain age or pass certain tests
2) You can take in a show car, but I think you can only do that for 1 year and I'm not sure about the legality of driving it on the road

There is a thread in the USA section which explains much better than I can

The car is clear to go over for up to 12 months. It looks like a wait of 2-4 weeks to get the V5 according to the DVLA website..

ETA: Looks like it can be done online now and V5 sent out a lot faster. Things have moved on a bit!

A brand new car registered by a dealer via AFRL will see the V5C land with the owner approximately 5 working days later.

A used car with the owner changed online with DVLA the V5C will also land in 5 working day.

If however is it posted, be prepared to wait up to 3/4 weeks

Just an out of the box thinking line, but, why not buy a car in the USA, then sell it again afterwards, would save shipping costs as a minimum?
