Apologies if this has been asked before.. havent been keeping up with the news of late (TVR less menas less time on PH!).

Is the ban on radar devices that I've heard mentioned going to happen for sure?

If so, where does mrs Edt stand (with her Road Angel mk 2) ?

thanks all
Ed

I understood that GPS devices are specifically excluded, as they give information to the driver.....they don't detect anything. This was probably because the Govt could see no way of enforcing a ban on GPS devices when things like TomTom are actually navigation aids....which happen to give camera locations aswell.

my concern with the mk2 road angel is that it has integral radar detection, as opposed to my original angel that uses an external, detachable antena, which i can choose not to use whne this law is passed

Well, I guess that might be difficult......theoretically they have to prove that you were using the radar detection bits.....but in practise, the mags seem to believe whatever the Bib/Prosecutor tells them. I guess that Road Angel could update their software to disable that component, if the law comes in??? I'm guessing you download updates like my Origin B2 does??

jezzaaa - there is nothing in the current wording of the Road Safety Bill that specifically excludes GPS-based devices ... indeed, they are not mentioned at all. A number of reports have indicated that they will be excluded (and this will probably come to pass because of GPS-based navigation systems) ... but there has been any amount of poorly worded legislation recently (perhaps all the good drafters have retired) and the "leave it to the courts to decide" philosophy might prevail.

To be frank, fixed speed cameras are in public places. I can walk up to them, moon them, do whatever I like near them, and nobody or no law can stop me from doing that.

So if I want a GPS device that tells me where they are, so long as its restricted to public areas, there isn't a lot they can do about it is there?

Und of course - we can rememberwhere the Gatso ist und look up on the scammers websites for locations und timetables of talivans...

Not much point really in banning something which tells us what we can find out und memorise anyway

re the mk2 road angel (and snooper s4 neo etc) - a firmware update will be available to switch off the laser detector, and delete the menu item all together - rendering the unit 100% legal to run.

of course, the firmware update is apparently going to be 'optional'...
