Hi All,

Looking for some guidance as to where I should go now.

Just over a week ago I was hit by a car while waiting at a red light (yes, some of us cyclists do indeed do this!)

He was stationary at the front of the queue of traffic waiting at the lights. Some commotion occurred with some guys on the pavement which resulted in him driving off through the red light and in the process hitting the back of the bike, destroying my back wheel and obviously knocking me off the bike as he took off.

Obviously I reported the incident to the police.

Luckily this was outside a corner shop with CCTV pointed towards the street. After walking home with my wrecked bike the next day I dropped a USB stick off at the shop to which they had kindly offered to upload the video file.

Having now reviewed the file myself I now have registration number of the car which can be seen on the CCTV footage.

I've supplied this footage to the police and they tell me they are sending the registered owner form 963 which means the registered owner needs to supply the name and address of the driver at the time of incident.

How do I go about recovering compensation for the damage to my property - which was quite extensive, a few hundred pounds worth easily.

Any advice much appreciated!

Use www.askmid.com and get their insurer, contact them direct and make a claim.

If you have the registration number you can get the driver's insurance details here for a nominal fee

http://www.askmid.com/askmidenquiry.aspx

Then contact his insurer's directly and explain that you want to make a claim for the damage to your bike.

Excellent, thanks guys.

I phoned up the Motor Insurers' Bureau and they said to fill out a form and send it back to them - is it best to do this or contact the drivers insurers directly? I imagine the insurers will try to wiggle out of this and I'm not likely to get lawyered up so might be best to let MIB deal with it?

Go direct to their insurer, you have video evidence, they will/should handle everything for you. No need to get anyone else involved.

Insurer first, then if no success go to MIB.

I agree.

They need to have the book thrown at them.

The person who hit and knocked me off last week was mortified, well initially. When they realised hitting me had cracked their bumper they were concerned about the damage to the car!

Waiting to see if they'll pay to repair the bicycle.

Their excuse was they didnt see me, in spite of having lights, and florescent yellow jacket on. Luckily I wasnt heard mainly as I came off on the opposite side of the bike to the car and got my leg out the way before the car hit the bicycle.

Hah will do my best.

Witness tells me she has been contacted by police so that's good, something might be happening!

Thanks for advice/tips all!

I'm a driver & they (cyclists) miss us because they are blinded by the colours of their body-hugging Lycra (ugh) & revel in the delights of taking up as much road as possible & competing with each other as who can hold up the most traffic.

If that's their aim then they lose every time to the car, that holds up traffic better than anything else on the road today.

It is amazing the police do not a lot, when they should be straight round his house arresting him. They just can't be srsed, better to just fine him.

I'm not a cyclist, but you sound like the sort of person I don't want to share a road with.

Yey! Great post.

I won the 2014 "holding up traffic contest" locally. Nothing like the Air ambulance and a complete closure of the A30 to stop traffic. It was great, spending over an hour face down on the surface of a roundabout. The five months it too to recover were ace too!

Oh. Wait. No. I was wearing red, white and black lycra. Coincidentally the exact colour palette of all the warning signs that are designed to be easy to see on the roads. Plus I was on a bright red bike, running front and rear lights during the day. And I was crossing a roundabout at which the van driver who hit me ought to have given way to me.

For the first time ever on PH I've encountered a stupid person who is so monumentally stupid that I've taken his offensive post rather personally. Come at me with that attitude in the 'real world' and you'd better make your first move a decisive one. Because I'll be coming at you, you utter tt. Why the fk we can't categorise people as "psychologically unsuitable to hold a driving license" I'll never understand. It'd clean up some of the moronic drivers on our roads, increase profitability of bus routes, reduce congestion and increase the number of journeys taken by bicycle in one quick and easy move.

Edited to comply with PH posting rules... wink
